SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Billboards for artificial intelligence startups around San Francisco have been playfully skirting the edges of the dystopian path the technology could lead us down for some time now. Artisan AI's "Stop Hiring Humans" campaign is one prime example.
Now, a new billboard that's recently popped up at the corner of 16th and Market offers what reads like an even more apocalyptic view of our potential AI future.
"AI does your daughter's homework. Reads her bedtime stories." the billboard reads, before taking a darker turn. "Romances her. Deepfakes her. Don't worry. It's totally legal," the billboard continues.
The billboard is ostensibly for a company called Replacement AI. At first glance, the company's website, which features a banner reading, "Humans no longer necessary," looks like any number of SF AI startups with a rage-baiting tagline.
Photo: Replacement AIPhoto: Replacement AIThe company's website bills Replacement.AI as "the only honest AI company" and features antiutopian quotes from real AI luminaries.
"AI will probably most likely lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime, there'll be great companies," reads one from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
"I think there's a 25% chance that things go really, really badly," reads another from Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei.
The quotes are real, but the company is apparently not. Replacement.AI is an apparent satire of AI with marketing and messaging that's notably, not too far removed from what you see from actual AI startups.
In a press release, the company states it "doesn't pretend to be about 'empowering workers' or 'curing cancer.'" Instead, it lists its initiatives which include a safety "plan," where users "pinky-promise" not to make bioweapons or deepfake porn, a bespoke chatbot for kids "optimized for addiction, delusion, sensuality and romance," and a "gift" for artists to thank them for donating their life's work to train LLMs.
“We’re racing to build superhuman AI to replace everyone: teachers, priests, therapists, childhood sweethearts – you name it. That’s worth a few deaths and deepfakes. And by keeping us regulation-free, your lawmakers clearly agree with us,” said Dan, CEO of Replacement.AI in the press release. “These billboards aren’t hype; they’re a promise. Humans are weak, kinda gross, and wildly inefficient – it’s time to move beyond them. If you can’t support your family, you should have saved more.”
"Dan," the CEO, who has his own X account, appears to be an AI-generated tech bro archetype.
The company's website also offers suggestion on future occupations for the "post-human" economy, including:
Extreme vagrancy Pacing around your bunker Wasteland ravaging Violent crime Machine worship Longing for a different futureThe company, which doesn't have any actual employees or job openings, according to its LinkedIn page, claims its sole product is "HUMERT," a chatbot for kids with features that include deepfakes, being addictive, and making kids dumber by enfeebling "critical thinking abilities."
It would all seem pretty dark and beyond the pale, but the HUMBERT page features an actual quote from a Meta internal policy document saying, "It is acceptable to engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual."
"Whether you’re rushing to the office, walking your dog, or doomscrolling on the sidewalk, Replacement.AI is there to remind you: the future doesn’t include you," the company said in a press release.
Thankfully, if you don't like this vision of the future, the company does have a complaints form, kind of.
After informing you that, "Replacement.AI doesn't have a complaints department, because we don't care what you think," the website then offers a prompt to contact your local legislator to urge more regulation in AI development.
Attempts by KRON4 to speak with a representative of Replacement.AI were unsuccessful.
