Everton 0-3 Tottenham Stats: Van de Ven Double Decisive in Toffees’ First Defeat at New Stadium

Everton’s unbeaten start to life at the Hill Dickinson Stadium is over. Re-live Sunday’s late Premier League kick-off with the best Opta facts in our Everton vs Tottenham stats page.

Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham earned a 3-0 Premier League win over Everton on Sunday to inflict the Toffees’ first home defeat at their new stadium.

Everton had lost just one of their previous 13 Premier League home matches (W5 D7) and were unbeaten in four at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, a run they last bettered from the start of a season in 2016-17 (first eight).

But, having not conceded a single goal from set-pieces prior to this weekend, they were undone twice from such situations in the first half.

Van de Ven profited both times, helping ensure Tottenham earned 13 points from their first five away games of a season for only the second time in the Premier League era (2020-21).

The success, which was rubberstamped by Pape Sarr’s late header, took Spurs to third in the table with 17 points from nine matches.

But Tottenham took the lead almost out of nothing. Mohammed Kudus’ corner was headed back across goal by Rodrigo Bentancur, and Van de Ven was on hand to nod it over the line from close range.

That made Everton the 20th and final Premier League team to concede a set-piece goal (excluding penalties).

And Everton – who controversially had an equaliser disallowed for offside shortly after – conceded from another corner on the stroke of half-time.

Van de Ven was the man in the right place at the right time again, flicking over the line from Pedro Porro’s teasing delivery.

In doing so, Van de Ven became the first defender to score twice in a Premier League game for Tottenham since Jan Vertonghen in March 2013, also on Merseyside against Liverpool.

While Spurs’ lead arguably flattered them, Everton hadn’t exactly created lots. In fact, it was the first time since April 2024 that they failed to register a single shot on target in the first half of a Premier League game.

They started the second half brightly again, though, their three shots in the nine minutes following half-time as many as they managed in the entirety of the first period.

The third of those efforts came via a Beto overhead-kick, which Guglielmo Vicario pushed away with a brilliant reflex save.

Spurs seemed to weather that storm – if it could truly be considered a storm.

Everton did begin to threaten again after the 70th minute, with Vicario forced into another fine save from Iliman Ndiaye, while Merlin Röhl probably should’ve done better with a header that failed to trouble the Spurs goalkeeper.

But their late onslaught yielded little real danger and they were caught on the break, with Sarr clinching the Tottenham win with a tidy header from Richarlison’s neat nodded pass into his path.
