State softball Day 2: University wins title; Eaton, Windsor are runners-up

AURORA — One out of three isn’t bad — at least if you are the “one”.

Saturday at the Aurora Sports Park, the “one” is exactly what the University softball team was.

The Bulldogs were the No. 1 team in the Class 3A state tournament when the dust settled.

They were also the only one out of three local state tournament finalists to walk away with the gold.

In yet another classic between a pair of longtime rivals, top-seeded University won in walk-off fashion against No. 2 Eaton, 5-4, in the 3A championship game.

In the other title game involving a local program, top-seeded Windsor struggled midgame to fall 7-4 to third-seeded longtime powerhouse Holy Family in the 4A final.

For the Bulldogs (27-2), this was University’s second state softball title in program history. The first came in 2019.

The Bulldogs also kept their heated rival Eaton (24-5) from winning its fourth consecutive 3A title and its fifth title in program history.

In a back-and-forth, hotly contested 3A title game, University junior Emma Zacheis reached base on an infield single to lead off the bottom of the seventh, with the game tied at 4.

Two at-bats later, Bulldogs standout senior Jasi Cole drilled a line-drive into the outfield to bring home Zacheis, with no outs, and ignite the celebration.

Meanwhile, just a few dozen yards away, Windsor (26-3) did most of its damage in the early innings before faltering late in the 4A title game.

The Wizards scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and led 4-0 before giving up six runs in a top of the fourth inning, completely shifting the momentum of the game.

Windsor finished second in 4A for the second consecutive year.
