Devon Sawa shot to stardom after legions of girls made him their biggest crush in the '90s. Some of them are still quoting his famous line, "Can I keep you?" from Casper. He was only in the 1995 film starring Christina Ricci for under a minute, but it was impactful. Additional roles in Idle Hands and Now and Then, further cemented his teen idol status at the time.
He later started veering away from heartthrob roles, instead taking on SLC Punk!, Final Destination, and the iconic role of Stan in the Eminem music video of the same name.

He also started down a path of destruction that nearly derailed him when he became heavily involved in the LA clubbing scene and, despite still being underage, began drinking heavily.

"I had a fake ID, and no one looked twice,” Sawa told the New York Times. "I would roll into those places in my pajamas. There’s no cellphones, so no one could record anything, and everything was going on in those clubs at the time."
He reveals that his behavior was so concerning that he was not cast in the Final Destination sequel that came out in 2003 because "they thought I might be a liability."
Instead, Sawa confessed that his agents told him that he should quit acting, move back to Canada, and seek help. That's exactly what he did, as the actor admitted, “Acting was always what I was going to do for the rest of my life — until it wasn’t."
While in Vancouver, Canada, he received treatment for his addiction, but didn't stop drinking until a drunk appearance at a family Christmas gathering served as his real wake-up call. After that, Sawa says he went to “90 meetings in 90 days on my own."
He returned to Hollywood, taking on bit parts and rebuilding his career, then landing larger roles on Nikita, Somewhere Between, and Chucky. Most recently, he played the human version of Harold on Twisted Metal, seeing a resurgence in his own popularity.
Now, he enjoys a busy acting career with dozens of roles in his rearview and three more coming up, including a role in Return of the Living Dead, per IMDB. But that almost wasn't the case, and Sawa is proof that sometimes, second chances are where the real story begins.
