HGTV stars Eilyn and Ray Jimenez lost one of their dogs — a Shih Tzu named Aria — in August. They shared the devastating news on Instagram back on Sept. 1.
"A piece of my heart, shaped like her paw, broke the moment I realized her tiny steps would no longer echo on the floor, that her snores that woke us in the night, and the way she always curled up near us would become memories," Eilyn captioned the post, in part.
Now, she and her husband — who host Divided by Design — are sharing the story behind what happened with their beloved pup.
"If you think your pet is safe with your pet sitter, think again," the captioned a joint Instagram post on Oct. 20. The couple left Aria in the care of a sitter they found on Rover.com.
"When we returned home two days later, the sitter came to our door crying, saying Aria 'passed peacefully in her sleep.' She told us a 'vet friend named Nicole' had confirmed it and even texted us under that name, claiming Aria had died from a heart attack," the couple explained, then stating that the story was "fabricated."

They soon found out that Aria was brought in for cremation the "same day she died" and a "rush" was requested. A person who worked at the cremation center said they were told that Aria "had been killed by a larger dog." Indeed, the dog's lifeless body showed signs of exactly that.
Eilyn and Ray also learned that the sitter they had hired left Aria with her partner while she traveled to Las Vegas.
"They cremated Aria without our consent — erasing evidence and concealing what happened," they wrote. They've asked the sitter and her partner for the truth, but have yet to get the answers they so desperately seek.
The comments section of the post quickly filled with messages of love and support.
"This is every pet owners nightmare. Never leave your loved ones with strangers. Period," one person wrote.
"This is heartbreaking. Please let us know how else we could help bring justice to Aria," someone else said.
In a statement given to Entertainment Weekly, Rover said they've launched an investigation and that the sitter is no longer part of their network.
"Our hearts go out to Mr. and Mrs. Jimenez as they mourn the loss of Aria. Many of us at Rover are pet parents ourselves, and we can only imagine the heartbreak Aria's family is going through," the statement read, in part.
Eilyn and Ray are also pup parents to their other Shih Tzu, Bentley.
