On Friday afternoon, the Blackhawks and Canucks made a trade. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as the two teams have been dumping pieces they didn’t know to do with on each other for years.
That’s especially been the case since Kyle Davidson became the general manager of the Blackhawks. Since taking over as the interim GM, Davidson has made five separate trades with the Canucks.
As a reminder: I continue to have Davidson’s entire history as the Blackhawks’ general manager here.
However, this is a trend that actually pre-dates Davidson becoming the interim general manager of the Blackhawks. On April 21, 2021, then-GM Stan Bowman traded defenseman Madison Bowey with a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (Jonathan Myrenberg) for a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. That fourth rounder (No. 105 overall) became Ethan Del Mastro.
Let’s consider the five trades Davidson has now made with the Canucks since becoming the general manager of the Blackhawks.
Kyle Davidson — Canucks Trade History
Oct. 7, 2022 – traded defenseman Riley Stillman to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Jason Dickinson and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft (No. 61 – subsequently traded to the New York Islanders). Not really sure if I need to dig into this one again here because I’ve been celebrating it for more than three years. Dickinson has been a terrific leader in the room, he’s been excellent on the ice and he was acquired for a surplus defenseman who has played for three NHL teams and three AHL teams since the deal.
Nov. 28, 2023 – traded a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft (No. 131 – Colton Roberts) to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Anthony Beauvillier. The Blackhawks rented Beauvillier through a portion of the 2023-24 season in which injuries — including one to him, unfortunately — crushed their roster. Beauvillier scored two goals with four assists in 23 games for the Blackhawks before he was flipped to Nashville at the deadline (also for a fifth-round pick). The Blackhawks effectively rented Beauvillier for the cost of seven spots in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft.
One other side note here: the fifth-round pick the Blackhawks got from Nashville for Beauvillier was transferred to Toronto to complete the McCabe/Lafferty trade. That trade specified that the Blackhawks would send their least favorable pick in the fifth round to the Leafs. Chicago was able to keep No. 138 (Joel Svensson) because of this deal.
June 27, 2024 – traded their fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Ilya Mikheyev, the rights to pending UFA forward Sam Lafferty and a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.Pure salary dump a second time by the Canucks, this time sending the Blackhawks the final two years of Mikheyev’s contract at the cost of moving the Blackhawks up from the fourth to the second round of the 2027 NHL Draft. Since arriving in Chicago, Miheyev’s legs are back and he’s been one of the best defensive wingers in the entire NHL.
June 28, 2025 – traded the rights to forward Ilya Safonov to the Vancouver Canucks for future considerations.Safonov is a big center who, at one time, was an interesting prospect for the Blackhawks. As time went on and he remained in Russia, the depth at center in the organization got significantly deeper. Maybe the Blackhawks owed the Canucks a little something?
Oct. 24, 2025 – traded forward Lukas Reichel to the Vancouver Canucks for Chicago’s own fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Our first full-circle moment as GMKD gets his own fourth-round pick that was sent to the Canucks in the Mikheyev trade. The Blackhawks give Reichel his fresh start, and effectively trade Reichel to Vancouver for two seasons of Mikheyev and a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
