2025 DUTCH QUALIFIERS

Friday, October 24th – Sunday, October 26th Zwemcentrum Rotterdam SCM (25m) SC European Championships Qualifying Meet SwimSwam Preview Live Results Live Stream

The 2025 Dutch Qualifiers meet got off to a strong start as 13 swimmers notched times sufficient to qualify for this year’s Short Course European Championships, taking place in Lublin, Poland, this December.

20-year-old Milou van Wijk put on a show in the women’s 100m freestyle, firing off a winning effort of 52.52.

She represented the sole competitor of the field to delve under the 53-second barrier, holding off British Olympian Freya Anderson who settled for silver over half a second back in 53.05.

Yara van Kalmthout of the Netherlands wrangled up the bronze, punching an effort of 53.48 to join van Wijk in clearing the SC Euros qualification standard of 53.78.

Van Wijk’s performance checks in as the 4th-best of her young career, one which boasts a lifetime best of 52.30 from December of last year. That rendered her the 6th-swiftest Dutch performer in history.

Her 52.52 from last night inserts her into slot #8 among this season’s top performers.

22-year-old national record holder Tessa Giele topped the 50m breast podium, putting up an effort of 30.17 to handily dip under the SC Euros QT of 30.45.

She was the sole competitor to do so, as Britta Koehorst snagged silver in 30.92 and Mare Schallenberg bagged the bronze in 31.09.

Giele’s lifetime best in this race remains at the 29.80 logged in the semi-finals at the 2024 Short Course World Championships, where she settled for 9th place overall.

Giele had raced the women’s 50m fly earlier in the session, where she turned in a time of 25.45, good enough for silver behind Maaike de Waard who grabbed the gold in 25.22.

Both women cleared the QT of 25.82, with visiting Scottish national record holder Keanna MacInnes also landing on the podium in 26.22 for the bronze.

23-year-old Sean Niewold made some noise in the men’s edition of the 50m fly, getting to the wall in a mark of 22.70, the sole sub-23-second performance in the final

Greek swimmer Andreas Vazaios was awarded the silver medal in 23.21 and Kenzo Simons hit 23.29 for bronze.

Although Niewold’s time was just a hair off his lifetime best of 22.65 from last year, he fell short of the QT of 22.53 needed to make the grade for Poland.

The men’s 50m breaststroke saw Jason van den Berg top the podium, busting out a mark of 26.12.

His outing crushed his former PB of 25.64 from just this past June, soaring beneath the QT of 26.57.

But he wasn’t alone in qualifying for Poland, as minor medalists Koen de Groot and two-time Olympic silver medalist Arno Kamminga also got the job done.

De Groot registered 26.16 for silver and Kamminga clocked 26.30 as the bronze medalist.

As a refresher, in May of this year, 30-year-old veteran Kamminga relocated from the Netherlands to Hong Kong to train under Tom Rushton.

Kamminga’s move followed Mark Faber‘s departure from his position as head of the High-Performance Center in Amsterdam after the Paris Games. Since September, Faber has served as technical director for the Flemish Swimming Federation in Belgium.

Finally, the men’s 100m free was a battle from start to finish, with one swimmer delving under the 47-second barrier

Brandon van den berg, brother of the aforementioned Jason, stopped the clock at 46.97 to beat the field and clear the 47.23 QT.

Van den berg’s effort crushed his former career-best of 48.40 from nearly three years ago to now qualify for the Short Course European Championships.

Runner-up Niewold also made the cut, hitting 47.11 for silver. Visiting Olympic champion Duncan Scott earned the bronze in 47.26.

Of note, Merlin Belmon posted 47.75 as the 5th place finisher, with his performance clearing the SC Euros QT for under-23-year-olds of 47.94.

    Additional Notes

Tiago Fonseca Gomes qualified for Poland, courtesy of his winning time of 7:48.09 in the men’s 800m free. He beat the pack by nearly 20 seconds en route to gold. The women’s 800m free saw Marte Hieke van der Kamp also make the grade for Poland, hitting a winning time of 8:26.83. That beat the QT of 8:29.17 by over two seconds. Raf Hendriks topped the men’s 200m backstroke podium among a field of just six racers. He logged 1:55.80 for the gold. British Olympian from the University of Stirling, Katie Shanahan, was too quick to catch in the women’s 200m back, hitting 2:04.56 to get to the wall over one and a half seconds ahead of the pack. Shanahan also won the women’s 200m IM, registering 2:07.77 to clear the field by over 5 seconds. Thomas Jensen earned gold in the men’s edition of the 200m IM, putting up a time of 1:56.22. That got the edge over Olympic 200m freestyle champion from Tokyo Tom Dean of Great Britain. Dean settled for silver in 1:56.81 as the only other racer under 2:01.
