Nearly 40 years after Back to the Future premiered, star Michael J. Fox still hears from musicians who credit his movie performance with changing their lives.
In an exclusive new interview with Parade, the Emmy-winning actor reflected on filming Marty McFly’s unforgettable “Johnny B. Goode” number at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance — and how that single scene inspired some of today’s biggest names in rock.
“I never heard from ['Johnny B. Goode' singer] Chuck Berry,” Fox admits, noting that the rock & roll legend behind the 1958 hit never personally reached out. But he does admit that he can't help but brag a little about the fact that rockers such as John Mayer and Chris Martin have personally told him that they started playing guitar because of that scene in the movie.

I'm a terrible singer!" But every bit of the swagger was his own.
“The music was prerecorded before I got there. They played me the track and said, ‘Can you do this?’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I can play it,'" recalls Fox.
For Fox, who was juggling Family Ties filming by day and Back to the Future night shoots by, well, night, that finale performance captured the pure exhilaration of both music and movie magic. “It’s all about the expression of joy in music,” he emphasizes — a joy that clearly transferred to audiences and future musicians alike.
Though Fox can no longer play guitar himself due to a broken hand, he still lights up when talking about the impact of that moment. “I love music and I love that scene,” he says.
