ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Multiple home favorites fell in the first round of the Section V Class A1 and A2 postseason.
In Class A1, it’s not the teams we expected to make the semifinals, with 7-seed Victor upsetting Webster Thomas, 12-6, and 6-seed Webster Schroeder shutting out Hilton, 17-0. The Blue Devils and Warriors will now meet with a trip to the Class A1 Sectionals Finals on the line.
Top seed Irondequoit also got tested, narrowly escaping Spencerport, 12-7. They’ll play 4-seed Brighton, who had the most convincing win, taking down Churchville-Chili, 35-14.
“We were the defending champs and we didn’t want this to be our last game ever,” said senior Justin Medina. “And we just told each other, you know, don’t want to go home today.”
Medina led the way with an outburst of 22 carries for 184 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Over in Class A2, it was more chalky, with 1-seed East/WOIS having no trouble with 8-seed Wilson/Early College, in a 48-6 final. The Eagles will play 5-seed Eastridge, who took down Gates Chili, 28-19.
“Coming back from our Sectionals championship, it means a lot. We were 2-5 and a lot of teams doubted us,” said Lancers senior Troy Caulkins.
That sets up an interesting rematch from week one, when Eastridge defeated East, 7-6.
Finally, 2-seed Brookport ran past Greece Arcadia, 42 to 6, while 3-seed Canandaigua held off an upset bid from Greece Athena, 35 to 29.
That sets up some great semifinals matches in Class A1 and A2.
