State softball Day 1 roundup: University, Eaton, Windsor advance to semis

Three-time defending Class 3A softball champion Eaton is right back where it is accustomed to being.

The route to get to that point, though, may have been a little less customary for the dominant Reds.

Second-seeded Eaton survived a scare in the second round of the state tournament Friday at the Aurora Sports Park, narrowly defeating No. 10 Lyons 4-3 to keep its season and its pursuit of a fourth consecutive championship alive.

The Reds actually trailed most of the game and were down 3-1 before rallying with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Eaton (23-4) might have afforded itself a brief sigh of relief afterwards, but it won’t be breathing easy for too long.

The Reds will face sixth-seeded league rival Brush (20-6) in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday for a chance to take No. 1 University or No. 5 Wellington in the title game at 1 p.m. Eaton defeated the Beetdiggers 6-0 during league play Sept. 18 in Brush.

The Reds opened their campaign in the two-day state tournament with a dominant 15-0 three-inning win against No. 15 Sterling (13-13) in the first round earlier in the day Friday.

They out-hit the Tigers 13-4 in that three-inning affair.

Freshman Paige Hofer paced Eaton offensively, hitting 2 for 3 with four RBI, two runs and a home run. Sophomore Kenzie Braddy pitched a three-inning shutout, allowing four hits, while striking out seven and walking none.

Juniors Bria Foster and Emma Anderson each had a home run against Lyons.

Foster also picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing two earned runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking three.

    A tale of two results

Windsor showed exactly why it is the top seed in the 4A state tournament shortly after picking up a hard-fought 4-0 win against another local squad, No. 16 Roosevelt, in the first round.

In the second round Friday afternoon, the Wizards dominated eighth-seeded school district-mate Severance 10-0.

Windsor (25-2) advanced to the second round where it will take on fourth-seeded Lutheran (23-4) in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner moves on to the finals, to take on second-seeded Palmer Ridge (23-4) or No. 3 Holy Family (23-4), at 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

In the first-round grind-it-out affair, the Wizards scored two runs in each the third and fourth innings.

Despite the relatively low-scoring nature of the game, Roosevelt was perhaps never in true position to score the upset, as Windsor’s talented junior pitcher Jenna McGinnis held the Rough Riders hitless.

Roosevelt ended its strong season with a 17-10 record.

In the second round, the Wizards scored two runs in the first inning and four in each the fourth and fifth. They out-hit Severance 8-1.

Windsor senior Kylie Smith hit 2 for 3 with five RBI, a double and a run.

McGinnis again dominated in the circle, allowing one hit, while striking out eight and walking none.

Severance ended its impressive season at 20-5-2. The Silver Knights picked up a tight 2-0 win against No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain (19-7) in the first round earlier Friday.

Both of Severance’s runs in that game came in the second inning.

    Absolute dominance

Top-seeded University didn’t flinch at all — despite having a clear target on its back — during the first day of the 3A state tournament.

The Bulldogs outscored their two foes by a combined 23-1, beating No. 16 Weld Central 12-0 in the first round and ninth-seeded The Classical Academy 11-1 in the quarterfinals. Both games ended early via 10-run mercy rule.

With those two wins, University (25-2) moves on to the semifinals and will take on a formidable fifth seed in Wellington (22-4-1) at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In the opening round, the Bulldogs led 3-0 before scoring four runs in the third and five in the fourth. They out-hit Weld Central 19-3 in five innings.

Senior Sydney Goetzel led a balanced University offense, hitting 4 for 4 with two RBI. Goetzel also pitched all four innings, allowing three hits, while striking out seven and walking none.

Weld Central ended its season with a 10-16 record.

The Bulldogs led 5-0 in the second round against The Classical Academy before the Titans scored their only run in the top of the sixth.

University responded by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to activate the mercy rule.

Senior Jasi Cole helped power the Bulldogs’ potent offense, hitting 3 for 3 with three RBI, three runs, a home run and a triple.

Cole also pitched all six innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits, striking out nine and walking none.
