Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Brianna Gough, a sprint freestyler who reps UC Davis Aquatics at the club level, will head to Houston, Texas next fall. The River City High School senior sent her verbal commitment to Rice University in late May.

Gough is a 2x California State Championship finalist, having finished 8th in both her events last year as a junior. She swam the 100 free (51.07) and 200 free (1:50.73), and though she was faster in prelims in both events, where she hit times of 50.76 and 1:50.04, respectively, she helped River City to a 31st place finish in a field of over 200 teams despite being their sole representative at the meet. Her junior year showing was also a sizable improvement from her meet as a sophomore, where she finished 18th in the 100 free and 25th in the 200 free.

Her best times come from the California High School Sectionals Championships, where she took 2nd in her primary sprint free events. She swam a 50.44 and 1:49.39 in the 100 free and 200 free respectively, and also led off River City’s 200 free relay in a personal best time of 23.43 to help them take 11th.

At Futures in Sacramento, Gough wrapped up her long course and 2024-2025 season with a few new best times and top finishes. Her meet was highlighted by a 6th place finish in the 100 back (1:05.17), though she was faster in prelims (1:05.04). She also set a best time in the 50 free during a swimoff, posting a time of 26.54. Other results included a 19th place finish in the 100 free (58.45), 26th place finish in the 200 free (2:06.90), 29th place finish in the 100 fly (1:04.45), and 14th place finish in the 50 back (30.76)—a best time.

    Best times SCY:

    50 free: 23.43 100 free: 50.44 200 free: 1:49.39 100 fly: 55.98 100 back: 56.16

Rice is a D1 Mid-Major in the American Athletic Conference, and competes annually at the CSCAA Nationals (a championship meet for those who were not selected for the NCAA D1 Championships). The Owls were conference champions last year, winning by a slim margin of 1.5 points—the title came down to the final relay. Rice is on an upwards trajectory, as their 2025 performance marked their first win since 2014; further, at Nationals, they were 3rd—an improvement from their 2024 showing, where they were 5th.

Gough is a huge pickup for Rice, as beyond her immediate relay value as a sprint freestyler, she would have led the team in the 100 free and been 3rd in both the 50 and 200 free. Further, she will arrive with score worthy times, as her best times in the 100/200 would have qualified for the championship final last year, and her 50 free PB would have landed her in the B final.

The Owls’ top sprinter (50.68/1:46.95 across the 100/200) and fellow Californian Ava Portello is only a sophomore this year, which gives them 2 years of overlap. Further, Rice welcomed 2025 BOTR recruit Lily Archibald this fall, who has bests of 22.8/49.6/1:48.4 in the sprint free events. Rice is thus shaping up to be a sprint free powerhouse in the AAC for the coming years.

Joining Gough in Rice’s class of 2030 is Lauren Cochran, Camryn Jones, and Winnie Liu. Both Cochran and Liu are also sprint freestylers, while Jones is a distance freestyle specialist. Cochran and Liu will add further depth to Rice’s sprint free talent, with Cochran’s 200 free sitting at a 1:50.84 and Liu’s PBs in the 100/200 currently 50.81/1:50.35.
