(KRON) -- On Thursday, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said that after speaking with President Donald Trump, the commander in chief called off a federal "surge" to the city planned for Saturday. While Lurie's announcement brought relief to San Francisco, it left the question of what was in store for the rest of the Bay Area hanging in the air.
Now, it appears that whatever planned federal deployment there was for the Bay Area as a whole has also been called off. That's according to Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee, who said she spoke with law enforcement.
"I spoke with Alameda County Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez who confirmed through her communications with ICE that Border Patrol operations are cancelled for the greater Bay Area -- which includes Oakland -- at this time," Mayor Lee said.
Poll: California’s Prop 50 likely to pass, Republican surges in governor’s raceMayor Lee's announcement comes as protesters are still gathered outside the entrance to Coast Guard Island in Oakland. The location was the site of a shooting Thursday night when Coast Guard security opened fire on a U-Haul truck that was backing up toward them.
The driver of the U-Haul and a bystander were injured in the shooting. Mayor Lee said she had been briefed on the incident and that Oakland police were assisting.
"I am aware of last night's shooting near the entrance of Coast Guard Island in Alameda," Mayor Lee said. "The Oakland Police Department is assisting the Alameda Police Department in securing the perimeter of the scene. The FBI is the lead agency investigating the incident, and I will continue to gather available information as it becomes accessible."
President Trump spoke publicly on Thursday about calling off the federal deployment to SF after speaking with the billionaire tech CEOs of Salesforce and Nvidia. He also said Mayor Lurie had asked him "nicely" not to send federal forces into the city.
