Shuffling Through ’85: Bears Defense Dominates Vikings in Another Win

This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest Super Bowl runs and teams in NFL history – the 1985 Chicago Bears. All season long, we’ll go week by week, documenting the Bears‘ dominating run from Week 1 through the Super Bowl XX win in New Orleans.

Week 8: Chicago Bears 27, Minnesota Vikings 9

Another week, another dominant defensive performance from the 1985 Chicago Bears.

For the second straight game, Mike Ditka’s team took on a division rival, and for the second straight time, they won in dominant fashion.

The Bears got the ball to start the game, and immediately went down the field and scored a touchdown on a 33-yard connection from quarterback Jim McMahon to receiver Dennis McKinnon. After Chicago’s defense forced a quick three-and-out, the offense went on a field goal drive to make it 10-0 before the first quarter came to a close.

Chicago took a 13-7 lead into the locker room at halftime, and on Minnesota’s second series of the half, linebacker Otis Wilson stepped in front of a Tommy Kramer pass and ran it back for a 23-yard pick-six. With the score at 20-7, it was pretty much the ball game thanks to Defensive Coordinator Buddy Ryan’s dominant defense.

The Bears would add another touchdown on a TD reception fro Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton to put the game out of reach. But, essentially, after the Otis Wilson pick-six, the Bears were on cruise control and never looked back en route to a 27-9 win and an 8-0 record.

Final Score: Bears 27, Vikings 9 | Box Score Bears Record: 8-0
