In spite of his long-standing ambitions for his would-be magnum opus, Francis Ford Coppola has been busy recovering from the significant financial losses of his 2024 film, Megalopolis.
According to People magazine, the legendary 86-year-old director has been forced to sell off some of his most treasured personal items to make up for Megalopolis' disastrous box office performance. These item include several highly sought-after watches worth millions in their own right.
A longtime passion project for Coppola, Megalopolis was originally conceived in the 1970s, taking a key episode in the fall of the Roman Republic and adapting it to a retro-futuristic version of New York City.
After spending decades in development, Coppola ultimately chose to finance the film himself, allowing him full creative control from studio interference.
As a result of this decision, Coppola wound up investing $120 million of his personal wealth in the movie, requiring him to sell off key financial interests like his majority stake in the wine company, Inglenook.
Unfortunately, Megalopolis's disastrous financial performance has forced Coppola to take additional measures to recover his losses, with the film grossing only about $14.4 million on its projected budget of $120 to 136 million.
These measures include auctioning several rare timepieces from his personal collection, including a unique watch that the Godfather director personally designed alongside famed watchmaker François-Paul Journe. The design for the watch specifically features a black titanium hand modeled after a human being's, with retractable fingers and thumbs to point out the different hours of the day.
“Speaking with Francis in 2012 and hearing his idea on the use of a human hand to indicate time inspired me to create a watch I never could have imagined myself,” Journe told People. “The challenge was formidable – exactly the type of watchmaking project I adore."
"After years of collaborating directly with Francis in the development process, it was a great pleasure to deliver this FFC prototype to him in 2021," Journe went on to say. "I’m proud to fully support the sale of this watch through Phillips to fund the creation of his artistic masterpieces in filmmaking.”
