Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, urged the UN and the Security Council to take “firm” action to stop Israeli practices in Syria, halt attacks, and prevent their recurrence.
In a Friday, 24 October Security Council session on the Middle East, Olabi said Israeli authorities must be compelled to withdraw their forces from Syrian territory, including the occupied Golan Heights, and from areas of recent incursions, and to refrain from interference in Syria’s internal affairs.
He argued that Israel continues its “aggressive” practices against the Syrian people through repeated violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
Olabi stressed that Syria categorically rejects any pretexts put forward by the “Israeli occupation” to justify its actions, saying these “crimes” aim to undermine Syria’s security and stability.
He underscored the importance of maintaining the work of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
He also pointed to the need to preserve the ceasefire and ensure Israel does not resume further “attacks” against the Gaza Strip.
First Security Council session after al-Sharaa’s speech
Olabi noted that the Security Council session held on 22 October was the first following President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s official visit to New York.
He told the Syrian state broadcaster “al-Ikhbariah” at the time that the Council is currently showing “increasing support for Syria and its efforts toward reconstruction and restoring stability,” adding that the meeting was a routine briefing to review the latest developments in the country.
He said Council members were expected in their statements to “welcome the political and economic gains Syria has achieved in recent months,” referring to improved conditions on the ground and the return of state institutions to work across wide areas.
President Ahmed al-Sharaa attended the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, marking the first time a Syrian president participated in High-Level Week, held from 22 to 30 September.
In his address to the General Assembly, al-Sharaa spoke about violations committed by the former regime, asserting that the “post-victory phase has opened the door for refugees to return home and has halted the drug trade that flourished under the defunct regime.”
He emphasized that Syria is “moving today toward building a new state based on balanced diplomacy and modern laws that safeguard the rights of all citizens without exception,” adding that the country is “laying the groundwork for a different phase defined by reform and the rebuilding of both people and institutions.”
Ongoing Israeli incursions in Syria
Israeli incursions in Quneitra (southern Syria) are no longer isolated military incidents; they have become a persistent pattern of violations that endanger residents’ daily lives and affect civilians’ stability.
These incursions range from intensive reconnaissance overflights to ground entries by Israeli army units into border villages, along with arrests and the establishment of checkpoints. The actions have not only threatened public security but also eroded residents’ sense of belonging, given the limited state presence in this strategic area, according to analysts cited by Enab Baladi in a previous report.
“Israeli military incursions and breaches continue intensively along the Syrian border, especially near border villages such as Jubata al-Khashab (Quneitra), Kodna (Quneitra), Sida Golan(Quneitra), Asha (Quneitra), Rafid (Quneitra), Bariqa (Quneitra), Taranja (Quneitra), and others,” said Yasser Faheili, an engineer from Quneitra, speaking to Enab Baladi on 19 October, describing an almost daily pattern.
“During these operations, Israeli forces search civilian homes and conduct surveys asking about humanitarian needs such as the level of aid required and family size. They often receive responses from residents affirming demands for an Israeli withdrawal from their land and adherence to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement,” Faheili added.
He noted that the practices are not limited to reconnaissance, but are sometimes accompanied by arrests and live fire, as well as temporary checkpoints that obstruct movement and fragment geographic connectivity between villages. These measures increase the pressure on residents’ daily lives and mental well-being while further entrenching Israeli control and undermining the capabilities of “local resistance.”
