A Good Win, Reichel Rumors, Mikheyev’s Value, Kantserov Stays Hot, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks won a really good game last night. They skated into Tampa and played a Lightning team that needed to get its act together. From the reports I heard and read, the Bolts’ coaches let them know it was about time to get their stuff together and start winning games. They didn’t play a bad game last night, either. The Blackhawks just didn’t get the memo that the veteran team is supposed to win games in that situation. Which was lovely.

A few quick thoughts about the game last night:

No, they didn’t win all of the faceoffs. The Blackhawks won 20 of 51 total draws in the game (39 percent). Nick Foligno (9 for 20) and Frank Nazar (5 for 15) took 35 of the 51 faceoffs. It’s really not ideal to have two guys taking the majority of the draws. Nazar was actually over 50 percent at the dot until Jon Cooper put Anthony Cirelli against him; Cirelli won all seven faceoffs he took against Nazar in the second half of the game. The advantage of being the home team. No, they didn’t out-shoot the Lightning. The final totals were 31-25 in favor of Tampa. Nazar led the Blackhawks with four shots on goal, followed by three each from Ryan Donato and Connor Bedard. The number that matters most to me in this category is the Blackhawks out-shot the Lightning 12-9 in the third period and won the game. In recent years, if a game was tied heading to the third, the Blackhawks were more than likely going to get out-shot and lose the game. Last night they were the aggressor and won the game on a break that was well-executed and displayed the elite speed they have as a team — that’s going to be a problem for a lot of people moving forward. They beat Andrei Vasilevskiy — who had a good night, for what it’s worth. So the “they beat another backup goalie” excuse isn’t valid. Here’s Nazar’s interview from the first intermission last night:

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) October 22, 2025 I am fairly confident that the Blackhawks have some things planned for the Centennial season that have not been formally announced yet. David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported on Friday that the Blackhawks are still actively trying to find Lukas Reichel a new home. Pagnotta reports the Blackhawks are looking for a draft pick as compensation, and the “Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks and Detroit Red Wings, among others” have expressed interest.

    — The Fourth Period (@TFP) October 23, 2025 Ilya Mikheyev has been incredibly valuable to the Blackhawks since he was acquired in a salary dump trade with the Canucks last summer. (As a reminder: the Hawks traded a fourth-round pick in 2027 to Vancouver for Mikheyev and a second-round pick in 2027.) Mikheyev scored 20 goals and posted a career-high 34 points last year, and has been an exceptional defensive player; he received a vote for the Selke Trophy last year. Ben Pope wrote about his immense impact on the penalty kill.

Ilya Mikheyev has given a Herculean effort to keep the Blackhawks' overworked penalty kill afloat this month. His teammates and coaches are amazed."He’s a workhorse. [He has] one of the craziest engines I’ve seen."New story: t.co/F8iRiFecW7

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 22, 2025 Good read here from Scott Powers at The Athletic on Donato’s start to the season. This was written before Donato scored twice last night. Writers love it when they put something out about a guy doing something well and they then do it in the game that night, so kudos to Scott for getting the proof from Donato on the ice last night.

    — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) October 23, 2025 Interesting stuff here from TSN’s Travis Yost on Twitter yesterday. He clarified to me that Matt Grzelcyk is included because he’s fourth on the Blackhawks in even strength ice time; Connor Murphy is fourth in total ice time on the blue line for the Blackhawks at this point.

    — Travis Yost (@travisyost) October 23, 2025 Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov scored his 12th goal of the season on Thursday.

    — ХК «Металлург» (@MetallurgMgn) October 23, 2025 Bulls rookie Noa Essengue rolled into the United Center for the home opener in a Blackhawks sweater. I guess my initial reaction is “why couldn’t they get him a new one that doesn’t have the toilet seat cover around the neck and maybe with a player’s name on it?”

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) October 22, 2025 The Nashville Predators recalled forward Matthew Wood from Milwaukee. The Carolina Hurricanes announced defenseman Jaccob Slavin has been placed on injured reserve. He is eligible to return at any time; they did it for roster flexibility. Reports on Thursday are that Zach Hyman is nearing a return for the Oilers. If he is available for their game on Nov. 1, that would be in Edmonton with the Blackhawks visiting. twitter.com/TonyBrarOTV/status/1981408809030734304
