Daniel Martin didn’t enter the home-fragrance game by accident. Known for sculpting faces, directing beauty rooms, and masterminding runway looks, the 52-year-old celebrity makeup pro has added something new to his repertoire: a scent designed for pets and people — inspired by his rescue cat.
“She’s here!!! Meet La Forêt Noire ? my limited-edition, pet-friendly candle created with @companioncandles,” Martin wrote via Instagram on Thursday, October 23. “A blend of Wintermint & Embered Juniper, it’s a scent that captures calm, comfort, and sophistication while being safe to burn for every home and every pet. Inspired by my rescue cat, Weezy, and crafted to give back, a portion of proceeds supports @missionmeow, helping animals in need ?⬛.”

Shortly after posting, it didn’t take long for fans to flood the comments with heart emojis and excitement over “a candle we can finally share with our pets.”
Although this marks Martin’s first foray into home fragrance, it’s not exactly a surprise. The longtime Global Director of Artistry at Tatcha has always treated beauty as more than surface deep — his work has been about how people feel, not just how they look. With this collab, he’s bringing that same philosophy home.
In a conversation with People, Martin called La Forêt Noire “a passion project for my inner goth.” He wanted a fall scent that was moodier than pumpkin spice, describing the mix of Wintermint and Embered Juniper as "a bit darker, smokier, but still earthy and tasteful." The matte-black vessel nods to his rescue cat, Weezy, who he says is the unofficial mascot of the project.

For Companion Candles founder Loren Lewin, the mission runs personal. After her rescue dog Mylo developed respiratory issues, she began to question what was lurking in everyday candles — and ultimately built a brand that says it has removed “over 250 harmful ingredients” to put both people and pets first. Martin was instantly in. “When I heard Loren’s story about Mylo, it really hit home,” he said, adding that he realized how few options existed for pet-safe candles that didn’t compromise on style or scent.

When he’s not helping to keep pets safe one candle at a time, Martin’s been busy elsewhere in the beauty world. In May, he served as creative director for the Savannah College of Art and Design’s annual fashion showcase, leading a backstage team that created 111 makeup looks for 170 outfits.

"What an honor to creative direct the beauty at this year’s SCAD @scaddotedu @scadfashiondesign @scadbeauty fashion show!" he wrote on Instagram at the time. "The inspiration behind the makeup was about using color and texture as an accessory to complement the fashion."

As for how Martin got his start, his path was anything but linear. While chatting with Into the Gloss in 2019, he recalled growing up all over the world before finding his footing in beauty. “My father worked for the government, so I grew up moving all over the place — I was born in the States, moved to Central America when I was five, and I was there until I was 11,” he shared. “I started working at an Aveda concept salon after high school, and it was there where I really got started.”
Over the years, Martin’s artistry and influence have earned him major recognition, including InStyle’s Makeup Artist of the Year and Marie Claire’s New Guard Artist of the Year.
