Car crash in Aurora leads to shooting after neighbors believe kidnapping was in progress

DENVER (KDVR) — There was a chaotic scene in Aurora on Monday, when a car accident turned into much more, ending with gunfire after neighbors thought an attempted kidnapping was happening.

It was a shocking end to his nap for one Aurora resident, who wished to remain anonymous for safety purposes, on Monday.

“I was asleep and I woke up to a loud bang," he said.

The man said he’d never seen anything like it outside his house near 7th Street and East Joliet Avenue in Aurora.

“I just looked out the window and saw the bottom of a car," he said.

The Aurora Police Department said a Subaru carrying a woman and small children collided with this car before flipping over. They say a BMW then arrived on scene carrying a man and woman and those two began pulling the children from the flipped car into their own car.

“Just a chaotic scene," the resident said.

Neighbors, who did not know what was happening, thought they were kidnapping the kids and stepped in. Eventually they let the kids out of the car and tried to leave the scene, but when neighbors tried to get them to wait for police, one woman pulled a gun out and fired a single shot.

The resident FOX31 spoke with was right in the line of fire and says he was left in shock.

“Would be a pretty crappy way to die, you know? Over something that should’ve been a pretty simple incident," he said.

APD says they were able to arrest the woman not long after, and she initially claimed the gun was a harmless cap gun, but changed the story in her interview.

“We certainly know it was more than a cap gun and she admits to a gun and says around the corner we threw it into a storm drain," Agent Matthew Longshore said.

That woman, 47-year-old Misty Townsend, is now facing charges of felony menacing. APD says while trying to help people out of a wreck is a noble effort, better communication was necessary here.

    “Relay your intentions," Longshore said.

He says they’re thankful no one was hurt.

“It could’ve ended a lot worse for more people involved," Longshore said.

The kids involved in the crash were checked at the scene and cleared, but the driver was taken to the hospital with injuries. APD believes speed and possibly alcohol were factors in the crash and the investigation is ongoing.
