As President Donald Trump’s sweeping immigration crackdown across the Chicago area continues, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed an Executive Order Thursday morning to “pursue accountability for the people of Illinois amid the federal deployments.”
According to a release, the executive order establishes the “Illinois Accountability Commission (IAC).” The commission will act as an independent board, “tasked with capturing and creating a public record of the conduct of federal law enforcement agents and recommending actions to hold the federal government accountable as they continue conducting military-style operations in Chicago, collar counties, and other areas throughout the state,” the release said.
The group will be made up of up to nine members, including Judge, Rubén Castillo, retired Chicago Police Commander Cindy Sam, and President and CEO of Latino Policy Forum Linda Xóchitl Tortolero.
Those in Illinois who witness or experiencing “concerning conduct by federal agents” are encouraged to report the actions to the IAC website, the release said.
“The Commission will determine how to safely and prudently collect testimony, hold hearings, and gather information from individuals, community members, subject matter experts, local officials, journalists, faith leaders, and organizations,” the release said. “These accounts will be used to shed more light on the misconduct of the Trump Administration’s federal agents and document a formal, public record that can be used to pursue justice and accountability.”
The order comes in response to the “lack of any federal accountability for escalating federal enforcement actions,” the release said, citing masked agents using unmarked vehicles, the use of chemical irritants and more.
The order also comes as Illinois and the Trump Administration continue their legal battle over the deployment of the National Guard in Illinois. Wednesday, a federal judge in Chicago, who had already blocked deployment of National Guard troops to the Chicago area for two weeks, agreed to extend that order for another 30 days.
Attorneys representing the Trump administration said in court filings Tuesday that they would agree to possibly extend the block on deployment for 30 days. However, they are continuing to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene. The Trump administration is pressing for an emergency order that would let Guard troops be deployed.
Pritzker and Trump have repeatedly traded barbs over the deployment of the National Guard in Illinois, with the Trump administration claiming the need to protect federal agents during immigration operations.
Earlier in October, after troops had arrived at an Elwood Army Reserve training facility, the state of Illinois filed a lawsuit alleging in part that the federalization and deployment of troops is “unconstitutional and/or unlawful.”
“The Trump administration is following a playbook: cause chaos, create fear and confusion, make it seem like peaceful protesters are a mob by firing gas pellets and tear gas canisters at them,” Pritzker said, during a press conference when the suit was filed. “Why? To create the pretext for invoking the Insurrection Act so that he can send the military to our city.”
Wednesday, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced a new “Plate Watch” hotline, for Illinois residents to report illegal license plate swapping after reports that federal ICE agents were modifying pates during operations.
“No one, including federal agents, is above the law, and we intend to hold them accountable, especially while driving on our roadways. This is a matter of public safety and protecting the wellbeing of our communities,” Giannoulias said in a release.
In a message posted to X Tuesday, Pritzker said “Donald Trump’s administration doesn’t respect the Constitution.”
“But they’re learning that Illinois does not and will not bow under their tyranny,” the message said.
