Person struck and killed by Amtrak train near University Park

An individual was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train Thursday morning in suburban University Park.

According to conductors onboard the train, the individual was riding a bike near the intersection of Governor’s Highway and Stuenkel Road and attempted to cross the tracks near the University Park Metra station just after 8 a.m. local time.

    The inbound City of New Orleans train, heading northward toward Chicago’s Union Station, hit the individual and applied its emergency brakes.

    The individual was pronounced dead on the scene.

    An investigation is underway, and the train is stopped near the station. University Park police are on scene, along with Amtrak personnel.

    Metra service is unaffected by the collision, the agency told NBC Chicago.
