Netflix to Adapt Iconic Board Game Into New Movie and TV Series

Like similarly iconic board games in Clue, Monopoly or Life, most people have likely played Catan at one point in their life.

A multiplayer strategy game where players take turns producing and bartering for resources, Catan incorporates anywhere from three to six players, each of whom are trying to build the ultimate settlement.

Originally debuting in 1985, Catan has long since taken on a life of its own among casual and dedicated board game fans alike.

Spawning numerous spinoffs, tie-ins and expansion packs, the series remains one of the most beloved and easily recognizable board games in the world today, its popularity rivaling other notable classics like Risk or Battleship.

As further evidence of its well-regarded favor among contemporary board game players, Netflix has officially announced they'll be producing an entire franchise based on Catan in the near future.

The new franchise will plan a variety of both "scripted and unscripted projects inspired by the hit board game," marking another exciting foray by Netflix into the world of competitive gaming culture (via Tudum).

“Millions of people [have been] enjoying Catan since it was created, and for many it remains a gateway to modern board gaming," said Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee (the developer behind Catan). "I’m thrilled to see the game expanding to a larger audience who will discover the richness of its universe. I find it exciting for the future of the brand."

“Anyone who has played Catan knows [that] the intense strategy and negotiation at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” said Jinny Howe, head of scripted series, US and Canada, Netflix.

"Hardcore ‘Settlers’ are going to lose their minds, and new fans will finally learn just how important a sheep trade can be,” Howe went on to tease.

The new projects join a slew of other Netflix adaptations based on pre-existing board games and video game properties, including Arcane, Castlevania, Exploding Kittens and Gears of War.
