While the dominating Montana State women’s basketball team is picked to repeat as the Big Sky Conference regular-season champion, the UNC women were penciled in closer to the bottom of preseason polls.
UNC, 14-17 overall and 6-12 in the Big Sky, were picked seventh by coaches in the 10-team conference and ninth by media. The Big Sky Conference released men’s and women’s basketball preseason polls Wednesday.
The Montana State women received five first-place votes in the coaches’ poll and 11 from media. Montana, picked second in both polls, earned three first-place votes and seven from media. Idaho was third in both polls.

The Bobcats were 17-1 in the conference, while sweeping the regular-season and tournament titles. Ohio State beat Montana State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
UNC’s top returning players this year are: senior guard Gabi Fields; senior guard London Gamble; senior forward Aniah Hall; and junior forward Tatum West.
Gamble, a second-year player for the Bears, led UNC in scoring at 10.5 points per game. She was named to the Big Sky Conference honorable mention team following the regular season. Hall was the second-leading scorer and rebounder last season with 9.5 points and 6.4 points. West led the Bears in rebounding at 6.8 per game. She scored 8.5 points per game.
UNC opens its season Tuesday, Nov. 4 hosting Northern New Mexico College. The game begins at 6 p.m. at Bank of Colorado Arena.
