When news came through ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Eintracht Frankfurt that Arne Slot had made the call to leave Mohamed Salah out of his starting lineup, it felt like a decision that could shape the evening.
If Liverpool were to get a positive result, it would be viewed as an admirably brave call. If instead his side were to extend their losing streak to five games, pressure might even start to mount on him.
Fortunately for Liverpool and Slot, it turned out to be the former. And emphatically so.
Salah hasn’t been in good form this season. It’s been well over a month since his last Liverpool goal. But this was the first time since he joined the club in 2017 that he had been left out of Liverpool’s starting XI for two consecutive Champions League games. It could have been interpreted as a statement from Slot.
His absence meant summer signings Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitiké started together for the first time, and there were some promising early signs. Isak, who has had a few impotent performances in Liverpool colours already, went through on goal twice inside the opening 10 minutes, forcing a save from Eintracht goalkeeper Michael Zetterer both times.
But Liverpool were punished while looking for the opening goal, caught on the break with men committed up the pitch as Rasmus Kristensen fired the hosts into the lead.
Was the blip threatening to turn into something deeper and more worrying?
It certainly looked that way. This was the fifth game in a row that Liverpool had conceded first, and they had lost each of the previous four. But on this occasion, they showed their mettle and fought back to win in style.
The returning Andy Robertson set up Ekitiké with a simple yet brilliant pass that put the Frenchman through on goal in the blink of an eye to become the first player to score both for and against Eintracht in major European competition.
Then Liverpool took the game away from their opponents with goals from each of their centre-backs, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, from corners. The first of those meant Van Dijk has scored 30 goals for Liverpool in all competitions, 26 of which have been headed. Since his debut for the club in January 2018, the only player to score more headers for a single Premier League club is Harry Kane for Tottenham (34).
After the break, Cody Gakpo added a fourth from a pass from Florian Wirtz to give the under-fire German his first assist for Liverpool in any competition since his debut in the Community Shield in August.
And he would get another before the night was out, laying the ball off before Dominik Szoboszlai rifled into the net from distance to make it 5-1. Liverpool could really do with Wirtz finding some form and they will hope this was the confidence boost he needs.
So, what of the talk of a crisis?
Liverpool answered their critics in emphatic style in Germany. They looked back to their best, and averted any reason to talk of a crisis.
After ending their losing run, the next challenge for Slot will be getting Salah back into some goalscoring form.
