Montana men’s basketball, the defending co-regular season champion and Big Sky Conference Tournament champion, was voted as the top team preseason by media and league coaches in polls released by the conference Wednesday.
UNC, which shared the regular-season title with the Grizzlies last year, was picked third in both polls behind Portland State. The Bears finished the season 25-10 overall and 15-3 in the Big Sky last year.
Montana earned six first-place votes from coaches and 21 from media for this year. The Grizzlies were 25-10 overall last season and 15-3 in the Big Sky. Montana defeated UNC for tournament title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Portland State, 19-13 overall and 11-7 Big Sky, return all-conference players in Terri Miller Jr. and defensive player of the year Tre-Vaughn Minott.
UNC returns several key players, who are expected to help the Bears remain in contention for conference titles. Those players are: senior guard Zach Bloch, who was named to the Big Sky all-defensive team at the end of the regular season; senior forward Brock Wisne, the top returning scorer and rebounder, respectively, at 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds; guard Quinn Denker, a graduate student who was a major presence after transferring from Big Sky opponent Idaho — appearing in 33 of 35 games, averaged 7.2 points and about 37% from 3-point range; sophomore center Egan Shields and senior forward William Humer.
The results of the media and coaches polls are below. The preseason all-conference team and MVP will be announced Thursday, the Big Sky said.
