For last week’s show I tossed the outline I had prepared when, just before I left for the studio, I learned of the Senate committee’s study that predicted—and warned—that our economy would lose 100 million jobs in the next ten years to AI, robotics, and other office automation technologies.
Today there are approximately 160 million jobs.
So instead of the planned show, I explored this prediction.
When I speak about us facing a future of “unknowable unknowns,” this prediction makes that case, doesn’t it? No one knows what this does to our nation, to strip nearly two-thirds of all the jobs from the economy.
I know one thing, and at the risk of being dogmatic, I know one thing for sure:
Regardless of what challenges you face as you make your way in the unknowable future the best preparation you can invest in, so you can create advantage for you, your family, your business, is to develop your most creative and entrepreneurial self. To be more adaptive, resilient, collaborative, ingenious, imaginative. To cultivate your pattern recognition talents. To grow a robust and diverse social capital network. To learn how to take multiple perspectives on the opportunity or challenge.
Last month I sent my publisher my new book, ‘Common Ground for US’. I submitted it before the study with this dramatic prediction of the loss of 100 million jobs was made public but you’ll find that the book does anticipate and is written for these sorts of future challenges.
And it’s written with an optimistic view of what can happen when we embrace the importance of being the most creative and entrepreneurial nation.
“Exploring Your Creative Genius” takes an expansive view on what it means to be creative and entrepreneurial in an ongoing conversation led by Carl Nordgren — entrepreneur, novelist, and lifelong student with decades of experience growing his own creative capacity and assisting others to do the same in exciting new ways!
