Golden Bachelor lead Mel Owens is finally opening up about one of the most talked-about parts of his backstory — his nearly two-decade marriage to Fabiana Pimentel Owens. Owens is unique among the Golden leads, as both Gerry Turner and Joan Vassos are widows, which is a different situation going into a reality show about finding love.
In an interview with Us Weekly, the retired NFL linebacker and attorney, 66, addressed his 2020 split for the first time outside the show, revealing how the divorce changed his perspective on love long before he started handing out roses.
“I’m never going to get in the way of someone’s happiness,” Owens said. “If you want to find somebody else in a different phase in your life — it hurts — but I can’t get in the way of your happiness. And what’s your happiness may not be my happiness. That’d be a real conflict — you can’t stop somebody, say, ‘I’m over here now.’ You can beg and plead, but I’m fine. Life is short, and if you’re in love with somebody else, that’s fine.”

He added that his focus during that period was on his two sons, whom he shares with Pimentel, Lucas, 20, and Andre, 18. “You live in the moment,” he said. “Plus, I had kids, so I had to think about them before me. So that was the main focus. And there were younger kids at the time — not infants, but teenagers. I let things work itself out, and it did. And have patience and understanding.”
Owens’ divorce from Fabiana — a Brazilian-born hospitality executive — was finalized in late 2024 after a lengthy legal process, as Parade previously reported in our breakdown of their split. The court ordered Owens to pay nearly $1 million in child and spousal support, though he retained substantial assets, including the couple’s multimillion-dollar Orange County home.

While Owens has stayed largely quiet about the relationship, his comments now come as his ABC season nears its finale, with three women — Cindy Cullers, Peg Munson and Debbie Siebers — still in the running for his final rose.
For Owens, the lessons from his past marriage seem to have informed his calm, level-headed approach to love this season. “In football, they’re always trying to trick you. There’s a lot of commotion going on, a lot of noise,” he said. “When things are crazy, I get really calm, and you can make decisions better.”
The Golden Bachelor Season 2 continues Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.
