In an alternate universe, Mariska Hargitay would have become known as a household sitcom star rather than the hard-boiled police detective on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit that we all know and love.
During a recent episode of Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the 61-year-old television star revealed that, during the earliest stages of her career, she originally had plans to become a comedian rather than a dramatic actor.
"How did I end up as America's sweetheart sex cop? I should have been you!” Hargitay quipped, referencing podcast host Amy Poehler's own successful career in television.
Though she's long since enjoyed a tremendous career on TV in her own right, Hargitay revealed that she auditioned for numerous iconic sitcoms throughout the early '90s, right around when her career was first taking off.
“I did a lot of comedy auditions. I did Seinfeld and I did Single Guy, and I tested for Friends so many times. I think for Monica," Hargitay said, referencing Courtney Cox's bubbly character on the show.
"I always thought I would end up being on a sitcom or doing comedy,” the actress continued.
In spite of her long-standing career ambitions, Hargitay said that a fortuitous meeting with an East Coast psychic ultimately led to her pursuing a career in drama over comedy.
"I was listening to [the psychic] really intently like this," Hargitay remembered. "He said to me… ‘You see that face you’re doing right now? You see that face?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He goes, ‘You’re going to be famous for that face. You’re moving to New York and you’re gonna be famous for that face.’”
“I said, ‘Uh, no.’ I live in L.A. and I’m going to be a comedian," the longtime Law & Order actress continued. "Six months later, I swear to God… I got SVU.”
