As the biggest stars of swimming are shining on the big stage this month in the World Cup Series, a new generation of swimmers is getting its feet wet in the sport. On Saturday, October 18, age groupers from across South Florida came together to celebrate fun times and fast swims at the 2025 Florida Gold Coast Swimming (FGC) Swimposium.

The day was divided into a morning session for ages 9-12, and an afternoon session for ages 13-16. A multitude of awards were presented, showcasing the success of FGC swimmers in a variety of categories, including FGC Record Breakers, National Top 10 Swimmers, Pool and Open Water Zone Teams, and Top 5 FGC Swimmers, ages 9 -16. (Lists of all award winners are linked below.)

Two-time Olympians Josh Davis and Hunter Armstrong were on hand to help inspire and fan the fire for all of the swimmers, families and coaches in attendance. Fan photos, award photos, and autographs abounded, and heartfelt stories of dreams, drive, reflection and humility kept the crowd captivated.

“Josh Davis was amazing and so motivating,” described Coach Ashley Wilson, FGC Safe Sport Chair and Head Coach of Tsunamis Swim Team. “He spoke about making an Olympic relay because he was .01 faster than the next guy. And how, in that moment, he could look back to every perfect streamline, every extra practice, every time he chose to do more — and he knew it was worth it. He made you want to jump in the pool right there and swim!”

“Hunter Armstrong was also a great story,” Coach Ashley described enthusiastically. “He didn’t start swimming until he was 16 or 17, and has swam in college and in the Olympics.”

His story was especially relatable because he compared himself to an age group swimmer, in that he hasn’t actually been swimming for that long! In fact, he revealed that there are some events that he has never even swum, such as the mile or the 400 IM.

On the course of his charmed journey, he also told some tales of back luck that challenged him along the way, that allowed him to persevere.

“He was dumped by his girlfriend by text at Olympic Trials, and almost didn’t qualify,” Coach Ashley re-told from Armstrong’s remarks. “He was last going into semi finals, last going into finals and then had to race Caeleb Dressel! He said he had a bad start, was dead last at the 50 and swam like crazy to get second and make the team.

He was fun to listen to, especially knowing that many of the kids in the room have been doing this for longer than he has — he’s only 24 now. He has had a whole career in just a few years.”
