With 43 Goals in Nine Games, Where Does Tuesday’s Champions League Scoring Avalanche Rank Historically?

There were a lot of goals scored in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. Was it the most on a single day in the competition’s history, though?

The new format of the UEFA Champions League introduced at the start of last season promised more excitement.

Whether that has been the case with the 36-team league phase replacing the previous multi-group stage is subjective, but if you equate excitement with goals, then you’ll probably be quite satisfied with the competition of late.

The first nine games of Matchday 3 in 2025-26 featured a whopping 43 goals on Tuesday night.

That was the third most on a single day of Champions League games in the competition’s history after 29 January this year, when 64 goals were scored across the 18 games played on final matchday of the inaugural league phase, and 1 October 1997 (44 goals across 12 games).

What makes Tuesday’s total even more impressive is that the nine games included a goalless draw, with Kairat and Pafos playing out a 0-0 stalemate in one of the two early kick-offs, despite the latter playing with a man fewer for almost the entire game after having a man sent off in the fourth minute. João Correia’s red card in Kazakhstan was the second-earliest dismissal in a Champions League game.

However, with Barcelona thrashing 10-man Olympiakos 6-1 in the other early fixture, there was at least a hint of what was to come. A curious quirk from that game was Fermín López becoming the first Spanish player to ever score a hat-trick for Barça in the Champions League.

The most goals on the night came at the BayArena in a game that pretty much had it all. Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain ran out 7-2 victors against Bayer Leverkusen, with the hosts being awarded two penalties (scoring one and missing one), and both teams having a man sent off.

A more surprising one-sided win came for PSV as they walloped Serie A champions Napoli 6-2 at Philips Stadion. It was the first time a Dutch side scored 6+ goals in a European Cup/Champions League game since Ajax in October 1979 (10-0 vs Omonia Nicosia).

Borussia Dortmund beat Copenhagen 4-2 in Denmark, while Inter and Arsenal eased to 4-0 victories against Union Saint-Gilloise and Atlético Madrid respectively.

Newcastle United beat José Mourinho’s Benfica 3-0 at St. James’ Park, while Manchester City’s 2-0 victory at Villarreal – in which Erling Haaland scored yet again – looked rather timid in comparison to other games.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there was a general overperformance in front of goal on Tuesday in the Champions League. When looking at total expected goals (xG) on the night, the 18 teams collated 32.4 xG, so there were more than an additional 10 goals scored than would’ve been expected based on the quality of chances created. Even with two own goals, which do not carry an xG value, that means an overperformance of eight.

In terms of goals per game on a single Champions League night (minimum four games played), Tuesday’s goal glut was the second most in the competition’s history (4.8 per game).

Coincidentally, the only single day of games to average more was 11 years earlier to the day (21 October 2014), when 40 goals went in across eight matches (5.0 per game).

4.8 – The 43 goals scored across the nine UEFA Champions League games last night was the second-highest average (4.8) on a single day in the competition (min 4 games), 11 years to the day since 40 goals were scored in 8 games on 21st October 2014 (5 per match). On that night, Bayern Munich thrashed Roma 7-1, Shakhtar Donetsk hammered BATE Borisov 7-0, Chelsea eased past Maribor 6-0, Schalke pipped Sporting CP 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller, Barcelona beat Ajax 3-1, CSKA Moscow and Man City played out a 2-2 draw, Porto beat Athletic Club 2-1, and funnily enough after their seven goals on Tuesday, PSG played in the lowest-scoring game of the night 11 years ago, beating APOEL Nicosia 1-0.

Just to emphasise the apparent impact of playing specifically on 21 October, the same date in 2008 featured 36 goals in eight Champions League group games (4.5 per game), the joint-sixth most in the competition’s history.

What will Wednesday’s action bring? We can’t wait to find out.
