Cheryl Burke Shares Emotional Message Before DWTS Comeback: ‘I Dont Take This Lightly

Cheryl Burke is returning to the Dancing with the Stars ballroom. The two-time mirrorball champion will be a guest judge on Halloween Night, three years after she retired from her role as a DWTS  pro dancer.

In a video message to fans posted on YouTube. Burke, 41, said she is “beyond excited” to return to the ballroom on Oct. 28 as a guest judge alongside regulars Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough.

“I’m beyond grateful for this opportunity,” Burke said, before sharing her history on the show with new fans. “I am a former pro who has been on the show for 26 seasons. I started most likely when you were not even born, back in 2006.”

Burke shared that he spent “decades” pouring her soul into the ballroom. “Honestly, to be invited back, not as a competitor but as someone who can hopefully share my knowledge, my experience, and my love for the craft of ballroom dancing, it is truly such an honor. I don’t take this lightly whatsoever.”

The ballroom pro added that she has been watching the current season of DWTS as a fan and a dancer. "My goal is to be there as much as I can for the couples, for the contestants," she said.

“This moment truly like a dream,” Burke concluded. "I cannot wait to reunite with my Dancing with the Stars family. These people I’ve grown up with. …I wholeheartedly can’t wait to share this moment with all of you.”

Burke also posted the message to Instagram and wrote, “It’s been 3 years since my final dance and official retirement, and I still remember that night like it was yesterday. To return now, from the other side of the floor, is something I’ll never take for granted."

Burke announced her retirement from the Dancing With the Stars ballroom in November 2022. Fans were stunned a year later when she wasn’t included in a tribute dance for late DWTS judge Len Goodman, who died in April 2023.

At the time, Burke confirmed on her Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans podcast that she was not asked back for the tribute dance, which featured returning pro dancers Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Kym Johnson-Herjavec, Tony Dovolani, Edyta Śliwińska, Karina Smirnoff, Louis van Amstel, Anna Trebunskaya, and Mark Ballas.

“I’m a little sad that, you know, I’m not there,” she said on her podcast in October 2023. “It’s not by choice. I didn’t get asked. … It’s a shame.”

She later theorized that she wasn’t asked back due to her podcast, which focused on stories and behind-the-scenes on DWTS. “I would assume that some people may not be happy with my podcast that I have here with iHeart,” Burke said on the Amy and T.J. Podcast in April 2024. “Maybe it’s the title.”

“This show is something that is a special experience that you go through these different emotions, and I think it’s important that we talk,“ she added. “And I always, I always am going back to the fact that I am in gratitude for my experience and my time with the network, and with, you know, Dancing With the Stars in general.”
