DENVER (KDVR) — The Parker Police Department shot and killed a gas station employee on Monday night while investigating reports of shots fired in the area, according to a press release from the Parker Police Department on Tuesday.
Officers responded to multiple reports from residents of shots being fired near the area of Mainstreet and Jordan Road around 10:20 p.m. on Monday.
After three minutes, the officers arrived at the location and found spent shell casings and live ammunition in the parking lot of the T Square gas station located on Mainstreet.
Police spoke to an employee of the gas station, with the press release describing the man as someone "who initially presented himself as a witness to the shots-fired call."
While the officers spoke to the employee, they said he became agitated with the officers and began to act erratically. He lifted his sweatshirt multiple times, showing a gun in the waistband of his pants.
The officers asked multiple times for the man to surrender the weapon, the release said.
The man reportedly became more agitated with the officers and grabbed the gun before pointing it at the officers, who shot the suspect and then began life-saving measures until medical crews arrived. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Police said the man was 32 years old.
The 23rd Judicial District Critical Response Team is investigating the shooting.
Per Parker Police Department policy, six officers have been placed on administrative leave due to their involvement in the incident.
The department said that this is the first shooting involving one of its officers since 2017. No officers were injured during the incident.
