Consumer Alert: Meeting Scheduled About Nursing Home Residents’ Rights

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Elder Justice Committee of Metro Justice is holding a free informational meeting on Wednesday for nursing home residents and their loved ones to learn about their rights.

“People who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities and their families don’t know that they have rights,” said Marydel Wypych of Elder Justice. “And so this is why we’re doing this to help inform people and to help them advocate for their rights.”

News10NBC has done dozens of investigations this year about alleged abuse and neglect of nursing home residents. For months, News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry has been contacted by nursing home residents who have detailed immeasurable suffering at Waterview Heights but they’re often too afraid to speak out.

Deanna Dewberry, News10NBC: “They don’t want me to expose their name they want to remain anonymous because they’re so afraid of retribution. What do you say to those folks who have those fears.”

Marydel Wypych: “They can get some help from the ombudsman who go to the nursing homes and help people resolve problems.”

Each nursing home is assigned an ombudsman to act as a resident’s advocate and someone from the ombudsman program will be at Wednesday’s meeting.

“There are some really good nursing homes and assisted living facilities, but there are some that are substandard and in some cases dangerous, as you’ve reported,” Wypych said.

Wypych says residents and those who love them can take action. “We want people to be empowered,” she said.

The Elder Justice Committee meeting on the rights of nursing home residents is free and open to anyone. It will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church located at 220 South Winton St. Someone from the ombudsman program will be there as well as a lawyer from Legal Assistance of Western New York.

Even if your loved one is living at a good nursing home, you should be aware of your rights and where you can go for help if you need it.
