The Hollywood icon used Instagram to share some big news about The Way We Were. It turns out that some key scenes essential to understanding her character and that infamous breakup were omitted from the original film, and now Streisand has taken action.
“The sad passing of my co-star and dear friend Robert Redford triggered a wave of 'mem'ries' about The Way We Were. When the movie was released in 1973, Bob and I were delighted that it was embraced by audiences around the world. Even more special is how its appeal continues to this very day,” Streisand began her message, which included a picture of the iconic film's 50th anniversary.
Then she went on to explain about those missing scenes and share big news with fans.
“Arthur Laurents wrote the script for me, inspired by a politically active young woman he knew in college named, of all things, Fanny Price! He said I reminded him of her. Although the picture proved to be a big success, for decades I was heartbroken that a few key scenes that told the audience why this star-crossed couple, Katie Morosky and Hubbell Gardiner, painfully decide to go their separate ways had been deleted. Fortunately, I’d saved the celluloid 'outtakes', and decades later, I was given permission to add back these crucial scenes. Today, on Amazon, in addition to the original movie, I’m grateful fans can now see this extended version on the 2-DVD box set 50th Anniversary edition in glorious 4k Ultra HD,” ended her caption.
