Foreigner and Lou Gramm Will Collaborate One More Time Before He Retires

Iconic Foreigner frontman and singer Lou Gramm shocked fans worldwide when he recently announced that he would soon be retiring from music — but it looks as though he and the band have several tricks up their sleeve before that happens, including the release of several new, previously unheard tracks from the band’s heyday.

“[There's] quite a bit [and] my assistant musical director, Tim Pedersen, is working on some of this stuff," Foreigner bassist Jeff Pilson told Ultimate Classic Rockin a recent interview in which he explained they have nearly completed an unreleased song from the 1979 Head Games sessions.

"There's another track that we have, which is [also from the] Head Games [period] that is a spectacular track,” Pilson, 67, added. “Lou wants to add a couple of harmonies to it, which he'll probably be doing relatively soon between now and when we do the Foreigner 4 shows [together] and then that will be ready to be mixed."

Pilson also revealed that there’s even more to choose from, as there’s several unearthed tracks they may not even touch. “We found seven tracks [from] the Agent Provocateur [album sessions]. I don't think we're going to finish all seven, but certainly five of them are really, really worth finishing up,” the bassist told the outlet. “So there's more to go through.”

Ultimately, fans have about seven new songs to look forward to — and for a band that kicked off in 1976, that’s one hell of a tall order and cause for celebration. "So there's two from Head Games that are going to be finished and as I mentioned, probably five from Agent Provocateur,” Pilson said. “Then, there's other pieces of songs that Lou and Mick [Jones] wrote over the years, which we plan on finishing. So there's a lot of stuff in the pipeline."

That said, the bassist didn’t have a timeline to share — and he’s not sure when fans can expect new work.

"Obviously, we travel all the time, so it's hard to find time in the studio, which is why [Tim] is doing a lot of prep work," Pilson explained to UCR. "He's a very capable musician and producer on his own, so he's able to make a lot of progress. I can't give you dates on when it's going to come out, but know that we're working on it."

Fans also have Foreigner’s recent rerelease of the 1981 album 4 to add to the exciting pile of new and unreleased music they’re being treated to. The record included several unreleased tracks, including session material, alternate versions, and live versions never before heard by fans. The album also included an entirely new, unreleased song written with Gramm called “Fool If You Love Him.”

The reissue of the band’s fourth album is a five-disc box set, and it’s a clear-cut collector’s item for any hardcore follower of the band. Luckily for fans, Foreigner plans to give their other classic albums the same treatment.

"That's the objective," Pilson told UCR. "Some of these songs are really high [quality]. The Head Games one that's going to come out, it's a great song. It was kind of ahead of its time for 1979 and Ian McDonald, by the way, had a lot to do with this track. I'm excited about it and Lou is really excited about it. This is a song, I'm telling you, it's every bit as good as anything else on Head Games. It was just ahead of its time. So I'm glad it's coming out [at some point]."
