Bears Offensive Line Progress Report: Colston Loveland’s Impressive Blocking Performance

While the Bears’ pass protection had a bit of an up-and-down day (partially due to Caleb Williams’ happy feet), the run blocking was quite good for the second consecutive week. After the win over the Saints, the Bears are now able to boast back-to-back 100-yard runners with D’Andre Swift eclipsing the century mark in each of his last two outings.

Whatever went on in Ben Johnson’s self-scouting meetings over the bye week is certainly paying off in the run game. Sure, the switch to Theo Benedet at left tackle over Braxton Jones has helped (though he still has some ups and downs), but overall, the line and backs have been much better since the week off.

While the five starters tend to get much of the recognition for that, and deservedly so, it was Colston Loveland who stuck out to me most from Sunday’s win over New Orleans. Not that he was the best blocker, but he made himself noticeable for the right reasons. Loveland is certainly a receiving tight end. While he might not be the best blocker at that position in the league, he showed a willingness on Sunday to get his hands dirty and get involved in the run game.

Obviously, it takes a ton of skill to block, but for someone like Loveland, effort and intensity in run blocking go such a long way, and I think we saw that in flashes last weekend. He’ll certainly get beaten at times, but if he keeps showing the willingness to block like he did this past game, I think we’ll start to see him get even more involved in the pass game, too. Let’s take a look at a couple of clips from Colston Loveland’s best game as a Bear thus far.

Colston Loveland Impresses In Bears Run Game

This first play came on 3rd & 2 from the New Orleans 22-yard line. The Bears led 6-0, but had already had two drives stall out in the red zone, and were in danger of making it a third if they didn’t pick up the third down.

Ben Johnson decides to go off-tackle from the I-Formation to the right side with Roschon Johnson. The interior of the line does a nice job securing their double teams up to the linebackers. Cole Kmet goes in motion and has a kick out, Durham Smythe leads up the hole, and Colston Loveland has the end-man on the line of scrimmage, ideally turning him inside but just making sure he covers him up most likely (again, no one breaking down OL tape outside of the Bears facility knows every assignment with 100% certainty).

So, essentially, Loveland is one-on-one with Carl Granderson. The Bears’ rookie tight end does a great job opening up a touch to the right with his first step, inviting Granderson to crash inside, which he does, then once he does, Loveland hammers the playside shoulder of the defender to seal him. After a little help in the form of a bump from Cole Kmet, Loveland keeps his feet moving and drives Granderson into the ground for a pancake. From there, Roschon Johnson hits the gap just outside of him and picks up 11 yards. One play later, D’Andre Swift runs for 11 more and a Chicago touchdown.

This play was really nice too, and showed some really solid instinct and quick reaction from Colston Loveland. The Bears are running counter to the right with Loveland serving as the kickout puller.

Loveland pulls for the end man on the line of scrimmage, which happens to be Granderson again. Granderson crashes down and stops, waiting to take on the puller. Loveland could have just blown up the linebacker or covered him up and let Swift work around him. Instead, once he notices Granderson is a bit flat-footed, instead of going for the kickout, he secures the outside shoulder just enough so D’Andre Swift can get outside.

At that point, Granderson has no chance of catching Swift, and the Loveland keeps looking outside after getting a hand on the linebacker’s shoulder. Once they’re past Granderson, Loveland goes and picks up the cornerback and clears him out of the way, allowing a big gain for Swift. Again, if Loveland just covers up Granderson, Swift is one-on-one with a cornerback, and still probably goes for a nice game. But the heads-up play and the skill to pull it off allow a good play to turn into an explosive one.

Is it taking Colston Loveland a little bit longer to come along than maybe we’d hoped the 10th overall pick would? Sure. But he also missed quite a bit of time with a couple of injuries, and he’s still just 21 years old. I think as he gets ramped up and more responsibility is added to his plate, we’ll see Loveland begin to break out a bit more. And we know if he keeps showing this type of willingness to block on the run game, Ben Johnson will most certainly take notice.
