Almost exactly six months after flexor tendon and UCL revision repair surgery ended his 2025 season, Justin Steele has the baseball back in his hand.
The rehab has gone as well as possible so far, and it’s great to see Steele taking this next step:

I hesitate to predict a firm timeline on Justin Steele’s possible return to the Cubs, and I expect that he and the Cubs would be cautious to put a fine point on it just yet, either. They’d originally ballparked a year, but that was an extremely rough estimate.
A couple things we know, though, for what it’s worth: flexor tendon surgery for pitchers is usually something like a 9 to 12-month range to get back into game action. Meanwhile, UCL revision repair can have a pretty wide window, something like a 10 to 18-month range. Much of that resting and rehab, obviously, is concurrent, and you can see why the Cubs ballparked a plausible return at about a year originally.
That felt a little optimistic at the time, in part because you’re not going to expect Steele to come back and throw 170+ innings in 2026 (though obviously, in rare cases, guys can do that). So there would be no real rush to get him back in late-April or early-May, and you’d have the luxury of being a little conservative with his ramp up at the start of the season.
Ultimately, I think you’re hoping that late-May or early-June is a possibility – sure seems like it is so far – which would be 13/14 months out from surgery, and would set Steele up to contribute 120+ innings. Assuming he’s healthy and returns to his typical level of effectiveness, that would be a huge boost to the Cubs’ rotation (and hopefully into the postseason).
