Paul Rodgers Shares Surprising Truth About One of Bad Company’s Biggest Hits

“Feel Like Makin’ Love” was one of the biggest hits for Bad Company in the 1970s. The English rock band released the five-minute track on their 1975 album Straight Shooter, and it’s been known as a rock ’n’ rollaphrodisiacever since.

“Feel Like Makin’ Love" has made Sexiest Rock Songs lists over the years, and 50 years after its release, lead singer Paul Rodgers addressed the song’s legacy as mood music for couples in the ‘70s. “I’ve heard it’s responsible for a whole generation being conceived, although that could be an exaggeration,” he told Classic Rock in an interview.

Rodgers, 75, started writing the song when he was still a teenager in the band Free.  In the interview, he confirmed that the lyrics rang true for him at the time. “I was staying at this camp in California when I started to come up with the lyrics and music to ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love,'" the singer recalled. “It was an amazing place to be.  …And I did feel like making love at the time. I think I probably was in love – that happened a lot.”

Rodgers also admitted that it wasn’t until he formed Bad Company and collaborated with Mick Ralphs about five years later that the song really came together. “I played it to Mick, and I knew it still needed something. So he threw in that big chord in the chorus and I said, Yeah! That’s it!’” the rock legend recalled.

Rodgers never dreamed that “Feel Like Makin’ Love” would become the hit power ballad that it became. The song reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975.

In an interview on the Ultimate Classic Rock Nights radio show, Rodgers said that when it came to Bad Company’s second album, Ralphs asked him what he had. “I said, ‘Well, I got this – ‘Baby, when I think about you…’ And Mick came in and said, ‘You know what you need in there? You need this – [the riff]’ And I went, ‘I feel like makin’ love,’” he said.

“We had no idea that that would become this song with so much attached to it – memories, so much atmosphere, and a lot of love, really,” he added.

Bad Company founding member Simon Kirke credited Ralphs’ guitar solo on “Feel Like Makin’ Love” as one of the late guitarist’s best moments. “The solo on ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love,’ as he wails away at the end,” Kirke told Defenders of the Faith of Ralphs’ extended solo on the iconic track.

“By the way, that song went on for at least another two minutes,” the Bad Company drummer added. “We just couldn’t stop him. We just had to fade it.”
