ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After yesterday’s wind and rain, we’re off to a very clear and cool start with calm winds. A warm front will move in today, bringing our temperatures all the way up to the low 60s. With that warm front will come a passing early afternoon shower, with more showers expected in far Western New York as a cold front then moves through. Some of those showers could reach as far east as the Genesee Valley this evening, but chances are small.
The low pressure complex that these fronts are attached to will slowly drift from our northwest to our northeast over the next several days, bringing us… (drum roll) LAKE EFFECT RAIN! Now, while we’ve already seen a few lake showers off of Ontario this season, it has been few and far between. This dynamic setup will last several days, and bring multiple inches of much needed rain in areas downstream of the lakes. Rochester and the Finger Lakes will see multiple days of rain as well, but much less so in terms of amounts… A quarter to half an inch of rain can be expected, which won’t help us much as we are still 5.5″ below normal rainfall since August 1st. Lake Erie will supply the rain tomorrow and Thursday, and Lake Ontario will supply it Friday.
This setup will also bring cooler temperatures and breezy winds. Highs the rest of the week will be in the low to mid 50s, and gusts will be 15-25 MPH tomorrow and 10-20 MPH Thursday. Noticeable, but not a threat, so we’ll stay Green on the Threat Tracker the rest of this week. The weekend will have cold mornings and cool afternoons but should stay mostly dry and mostly cloudy. There is still a slight chance of rain on Sunday, but check back in for updates on that forecast.
