The wonderful world of The Wizard of Oz somehow keeps getting even more gorgeous — this time, it’s in the form of a new illustrated special edition of L. Frank Baum’s book.
The Puffin in Bloom edition of the children’s novel was published on Tuesday, October 21, featuring beautiful cover illustrations by Rifle Paper Co. creative director Anna Bond. The illustrator reimagined the cover artwork for the new version, making Dorothy the focal point as she walked along the yellow brick road surrounded by flowers. The striking green backdrop and gold lettering pulled the aesthetic together with nods to the story’s familiar color scheme.

The deluxe hardcover edition of The Wizard of Oz is the latest in the Puffin in Bloom series, a favorite of collectors which takes classic books and redesigns them with floral cover illustrations by Bond. Other Puffin in Bloom titles that have already been released include Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery, A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett and Heidi by Johanna Spyri.
Baum debuted his iconic children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900. At the time, the book featured illustrations by W. W. Denslow, whose interior artwork from the first edition remains in the Puffin in Bloom version.

The story follows Dorothy as she visits the magical Land of Oz, encountering famous characters such as the Wicked Witch of the West, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, Glinda the Good Witch and the titular Wizard of Oz.
Baum’s novel was adapted into the classic live-action film The Wizard of Oz in 1939. The musical starred Judy Garland (Dorothy), Frank Morgan (Wizard of Oz), Ray Bolger (Scarecrow), Jack Haley (Tin Man), Bert Lahr (Cowardly Lion), Billie Burke (Good Witch Glinda) and Margaret Hamilton (Wicked Witch of the West).
The movie was a critical success, earning Academy Awards for Best Original Song for “Over the Rainbow” and Best Original Score. Garland also won the Academy Juvenile Award for her performance.
To this day, The Wizard of Oz is still considered one of the greatest films ever made.
The release of the Puffin in Bloom book comes exactly one month before Wicked: For Good hits theaters on November 21. Its 2024 predecessor, Wicked, and the sequel are adapted from the 2003 stage musical, which reimagines the story of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good around the events of The Wizard of Oz.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in the sequel alongside returning castmates Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero), Jeff Goldblum (Wonderful Wizard of Oz), Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), Marissa Bode (Nessarose), Ethan Slater (Boq) and Bowen Yang (Pfannee).
