Illinois Wins Eight Events En Route to Season Opening Win Over Iowa State in Ames

The Illinois Fighting Illini kicked off their 2025-2026 campaign with a 123-82 victory over the Cyclones of Iowa State in Ames on Saturday.

    The Fighting Illini women were led by senior Sara Jass, who notched a pair of wins, clocking 51.92 in the 100 freestyle and 4:22.44 in the 400 IM (just off of her time from October of 2024 of 4:20.17).

    Four other Illini swimmers picked up individual event wins; sophomore Chloe Diner picked up the 100 breaststroke win in 1:03.49. Fellow sophomore and San Diego State transfer Eva Allan took the 200 free win in 1:54.01. Sophia Paduano clocked 2:05.06 to win the 200 backstroke. Rounding out the individual winners for Illinois was Liv Dorshorst, who captured the 500 free in 5:03.53.

    The Illini picked up valuable points in the relays as well, securing wins in both the 400 medley and 200 free relays.

    Illinois’ 400 medley squad of Paduano (56.39), Kayla Duran (1:03.07), Diner (56.25), and Allan (52.18) clocked 3:47.89, taking the win by over five and a half seconds over Iowa State (3:53.58).

    The 200 free ‘B’ relay for Illinois, comprised of Isabella Wilhelm (24.10), Sophia Yousuf (24.07), Audrey Cavaliere (24.06), and Allan (24.06), took down both Illinois’ and Iowa State’s ‘A’ relays, stopping the clock in 1:36.29.

    Iowa State stayed competitive, with plenty of help from the diving events. Abby Tollefson (283.50) and Katherine Mitchell (278.55) finished 1-2 on 1-meter. Later, Mitchell would claim the platform crown, scoring 216.00.

    The Cyclone women did earn one victory in between the lane lines; freshman Kendall Mallers was the lone swimming event winner for Iowa State, surging to a 1.17 second win in the 200 fly, finishing in 2:07.24.

    Illinois will host the House of Paign Invite against Illinois State and Southern Illinois from October 24-25th. For the Cyclones, they will travel to Brookings, S.D. to face off against South Dakota State on October 24th.
