While taking to his Instagram Reels on October 17 ahead of their fourth wedding anniversary, Tarek, 44, shared a clip from one of his livestreams in which he recalled a "debacle" on their first date.
Tarek explained that he met Heather, 38, on the Fourth of July in 2019 when their mutual friends introduced them in Newport Beach, California. After noting that fans already knew how they met, he said that he had not publicly shared the story of their first date.
He said that Heather had cancelled the date, saying it wasn't a "good idea." Tarek said, "She blew me off. For a second there, I was sulking."
Tarek was determined to win her over, so he texted her to say that he was "different" than what she thought and encouraged her to "give it a chance." He said his plan worked, and they soon started texting more frequently.
The pair ultimately planned a date to chat over a glass of wine, which he said she suggested since it was less of a commitment than dinner.
On the day of their date, Tarek traveled from South Africa and headed to an event where he served as the keynote guest. After he gave his address, Tarek snuck out as guests grew distracted by a a hovering helicopter on the grounds of the country club venue.
"For whoever was there, I apologize," he said of his early departure. "We got married, we have kids, so you can't be mad anymore."
The HGTV star then embarked on a two-hour drive in a sprinter van as he tried to calm himself down ahead of the date. Once he met up with Heather, he recalled thinking, "Holy s--t, she was so stunning."
While he was happy to finally be spending time with Heather, he shared that the "worst part" was that he wore blue sweater that he reserves for wearing every Christmas. "Then I realized something — it's July. I can just feel the beads of sweat slowly rolling down my forehead," he said.
Tarek took several trips to the restroom to cool off and wipe his face, which led Heather to ask him if he was okay. He then told her was having an anxiety attack, and she responded, "We should just get drunk and have fun."
"Next thing I know, we're taking shots, having drinks. I think I ripped half the sweater off," he said.
Despite his wardrobe concerns, the couple hit it off and decided to move their date to another bar. After Heather realized she left her sweater behind, Tarek said he wanted to be "Superman" and get it for her. However, chaos ensued when he ran out of the dark bar and accidentally slammed into a door and banged his head. He said he nearly knocked himself out, though still managed to save face.

"I acted like nothing happened, other than that the side of my head was sticking up," he said. "By the way, she didn't even use the damn sweater."
The rest of the date went well, and the couple even shared their first kiss that night. "This debacle of a date pulled off a miracle," he said.
Tarek and Heather got married in October 2021, and they welcomed their song, Tristan, in 2023. Additionally, Tarek is the father to daughter Taylor, 15, and son Brayden, 10, with his ex-wife, Christina Haack.
