No. 8 Ole Miss will have quite the challenge in order to avoid a losing streak as it will take on host No. 13 Oklahoma on Saturday. To make matters even more daunting, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin evidently believes Oklahoma’s defense is finding ways to get their opponents’ signals.
During his Monday press conference, Kiffin explained why he thinks the Sooners have an edge on their opponents. Oklahoma’s defense ranks second nationally in points per game (9.4).
“You know, film study of signals. I’ll just tell you how it is. I think they do a great job. If you study people really well and then you have enough confidence as a coach to go after those, that seems like what he does. Seems like they’ve got a really good beat on the plays that are coming when they’re called,” Kiffin said. “They do a great job of going and taking those away.”
Kiffin added that he even warned Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze after the Tigers’ 24-17 loss vs. Oklahoma on Sept. 20.
“You look at the Auburn game, I told Hugh [Freeze] after watching the game: ‘You might want to switch your signals. It looks like they have the plays.'” Kiffin said. “The middle safety is running down to steal slants, which is very abnormal.”
