Keith Urban is giving some insight to his life on the road prior to his split with Nicole Kidman — and it didn't sound easy.
The longtime musician, 57, opened up about the strenuous nature of touring on the premiere episode of his of new show, The Road, on Sunday night (Oct. 19). In the opening scene, Urban chatted with executive producer Blake Shelton about the "challenges" of being on the road.
"It's a calling and you're born to do it — or you're not gonna make it," Urban said, who announced his separation with Kidman last month.
He continued, "When you wake up on a tour bus at 3:30 in the morning and you're sick as a dog, you're in the middle of nowhere and you've got to play your fifth show later that night and you haven't slept and you miss your friends and you're missing your family and you're completely lonely and miserable and sick and you say to yourself, 'Why am I doing this?'"

The Road, a singing competition show, is all about the ups and downs of the road, aiming to give 12 emerging musicians the chance to open for Urban on tour. As they travel to various venues across America, Urban, Shelton and a live audience decide who advances to the next city and eventually takes home the grand prize.
Looking ahead at the first season of The Road, Urban said he's looking to find "who's made of that stuff" that will help them persevere even when touring gets tough.
The Road airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
