Get Your Fake Offers Ready: Tarik Skubal Might Be Available via Trade

Although I think Paul Skenes would probably be everyone’s first (and the likely correct) answer to the question “Who’s the best pitcher in baseball right now?” Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal is at least in the conversation. In fact, Skubal arguably out-pitched Skenes this year, though it’s not really worth a debate (they’re both the elite of the elite, which is high enough praise for either guy). And that’s what makes the latest bit of rumors so exciting.

According to the latest speculation (with a dash of more sourced reporting via The Athletic), Tarik Skubal is going to be available via trade this offseason. Let’s discuss.

    Tarik Skubal Trade Rumors

This coming season, 2026, will be the last year of control the Tigers have over Tarik Skubal. And because their extension efforts have so far been laughably light (four-years/$100M offered last winter…) — and that goes double, seeing as Skubal is represented by Scott Boras, who is reportedly seeking $400M — the prevailing wisdom is that Detroit may look to trade its ace this winter.

Indeed, even if you think Skubal is unlikely to get $400M, he’s very well set up to match or top the current record holders, Yoshinobu Yamamoto ($325M) and Gerrit Cole ($324M). The Tigers do not seem willing to go that far.

Thus, the Traik Skubal trade rumors are starting.

At The Athletic, Will Sammon said: “If the Detroit Tigers make ace Tarik Skubal available in trade discussions this winter, and signs point to them doing just that, then the New York Mets are expected to get involved….some executives around the league are figuring that Detroit will make the left-hander available based on the Post’s reporting.”

The Mets, then, are one potentially interested party, though you couldn’t realistically exclude any team with a good minor league system and eyes on contending next year.

The Cubs, because I know you’re wondering, do have a need at the top of the rotation and are certainly expected to contend next season … but I don’t think they’re going to be making another high-priced, one-year trade for a guy looking for $400M+ one year later (Kyle Tucker being the other). And that’s being pretty generous about their minor league system, which is not what it was just 1.5 years ago.*

*That’s not a dis on the Cubs, who have enjoyed significant contributions from recently graduated prospects like Pete Crow-Armstrong, Matt Shaw, and Cade Horton, and to a lesser extent, Moises Ballesteros and Owen Caissie. They’ve also recently traded some top-100 prospects (Cam Smith, Zyhir Hope, Jackson Ferris) for significant big league contributions, which is great! I’m just pointing out that ANOTHER big prospect trade is probably not in the cards – again, especially for a one-year guy represented by Scott Boras. No, trading for Skubal would almost necessarily mean subtracting (perhaps even significantly) from the big league roster.

On the flip side, the Tigers are not really in a “must-trade” situation. At least not immediately. They just wrapped up a competitive (albeit disappointing season) and could easily try again next year, preserving the flexibility to trade Skubal at the deadline if things go sideways. But not unlike the Brewers, who are in a similar situation but are otherwise open to a deal for Freddy Peralta, Detroit could use this opportunity to load up on young talent.

And make no mistake, it would be a HAUL — easily clearing the significant recent returns for traded aces like Garrett Crochet and Corbin Burnes. At The Athletic, Will Sammon leaned on some sources to determine that a Mets return for Tarik Skubal might look something like #30 prospect Jett Williams (Triple-A), #46 prospect Jonah Tong (MLB), and recent top-100 prospect Brandon Sproat (also already debuted at MLB). Could the Cubs beat that with some combination of prospects and big leaguers? Sure. I just wouldn’t count on that. And frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the return is somehow even bigger than that.

In any case, you should be aware of his potential availability. Because the Cubs will be involved in the market for starting pitchers, where the rumored presence of Freddy Peralta and Tarik Skubal will play a significant role.
