Chris Young may be a seasoned performer with nearly two decades of hits behind him, but even veterans can have an off night — and some fans at Boots In The Park in Tucson, Arizona, say his recent headlining set didn’t live up to expectations.
After just releasing his tenth studio album, I Didn’t Come Here To Leave, the country star stepped into the headlining slot at the festival with high expectations. But after a viral video surfaced showing him struggling through one of his songs, fans quickly voiced their disappointment.
The TikTok clip of his 2015 No. 1 hit, “I’m Comin’ Over,” revealed moments where his voice sounded pitchy and the timing felt rushed. One fan commented, “It was so bad” and another added, “so disappointing.” One concertgoer even "left 3 songs in because we just couldn’t sit through it.”
Others shared similar experiences, with some longtime followers recalling previous concerts that didn’t meet expectations. “I saw him twice in concert and both times, I was disappointed,” one fan wrote.
@scdowdy87When you pay over a hundred dollars to see @Chris Young and he’s drunkedy drunk drunk. WOW #bootsinthepark #tornupcountry ChrisYoungRuinedMyBirthday@Boots In The Park ?
♬ original sound - SCDOWDYYet, plenty of fans came to his defense, pointing out that vocal issues can happen to even the most experienced performers.
“Everyone. He may have vocal cord issues. Happens to plenty of performers. Listen, everyday for one year, sing your favorite and hardest songs for 2 hours. Let’s see how your voice sounds after a year. He’s been at for many,” one fan wrote.
Another fan defended the singer, suggesting the issue might have been beyond his control. “I’ve seen him in concert and never had this problem. It may be the sound system,” they explained. One other user hypothesized, “His inners ‘his ear phones’ are failing or glitching. He’s off by a beat. And it’s hard to hear yourself up there without them.”
Parade has reached out to Young’s team for comment.
Young’s career took off in 2006 when he won the fourth season of the singing competition Nashville Star, earning him a recording contract with RCA Records. Soon after, he released his self-titled debut album.
Since then, he’s released ten records and scored more than a dozen No. 1 hits, including fan favorites like “The Man I Want to Be,” “Gettin’ You Home,” “Voices” and “Losing Sleep.”
His latest album, I Didn’t Come Here To Leave, marks his first release under his new label, Black River Entertainment. In an interview with Country Now, the Tennessee native shared that his songwriting never really paused, even after scoring his 14th career No. 1 hit with “Young Love & Saturday Nights” in 2024.
“It was very interesting for me because I had all this music that I’d been writing, I’d been constantly writing, and I was like, ‘what am I doing? I’ve got a record out, we just had a number one.’ I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m just continuing to write more and more songs and I had most of this album just teed up, ready to go, not all of it, and I definitely rerecorded all of the demos that I had, but that was one thing that we did and spent a lot of time on.”
