Brett James Final Communication Before Fatal Plane Crash Revealed in New Report

Legendary songwriter Brett James and two family members tragically lost their lives in a plane crash on September, 18. Now, new details from the National Transportation Safety Board reveal what happened during those final moments.

According to WFAA, the preliminary NTSB report reveals that the plane, piloted by James himself, “appeared to spiral” as it descended toward Macon County Airport in Franklin, North Carolina.

On the afternoon of September 18, at approximately 2:48 P.M. local time, James, 52, began his approach to the runway. In his final communication with air traffic control, he reported flying at 6,800 feet and intended to complete a full 360-degree turn before landing.

Tracking data confirms the plane’s descent included a left turn, described by investigators as a "tightening spiral." Witnesses on the ground reportedly saw the plane roll into an upside-down position before it disappeared behind trees.

The NTSB’s investigation found the plane resting upright in the crash field, with no evidence of engine failure. However, the full cause remains under further investigation.

Among the victims were James’ wife, Melody Carole, and her 28-year-old daughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson. The crash occurred just days after James and his wife celebrated Wilson’s 28th birthday, as shared in a post on Carole’s Instagram.

James was one of Nashville’s most acclaimed country music songwriters. His career includes co-writing nearly a dozen hits for Carrie Underwood, such as “Church Bells,” “Cowboy Casanova,” “The Champion” and the Grammy-winning “Jesus Take the Wheel.”

Beyond Underwood, James wrote chart-toppers for Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley, Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride and many others.

Following his death, tributes poured in from artists who had worked closely with James, including Jason Aldean.

The country superstar had just learned of James’ passing moments before taking the stage. In an emotional speech to the audience, he shared the news while introducing one of their early collaborations.

“This next song is a song that was one of the songs that was early on in my career,” Aldean said. “A longtime friend of ours, the guy that wrote this song, actually, we found out today died in a plane crash in North Carolina. This guy has written a lot of stuff for us over the years.”

Aldean went on to mention several of James’ contributions to his albums, including “Two Night Town” from Old Boots, New Dirt and “Grown Woman” featuring Miranda Lambert from Relentless. He then performed “The Truth,” a chart-topping hit co-written by James and Ashley Monroe, dedicating the song to his late friend.
