Victory Monday, Dominant Bedard, Great Knight, Vlasic’s A, Lardis’ Big Night, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks picked up an impressive win last night, closing a tough segment of their season. They opened the new year with seven games in 12 days, skating every other day for almost two full weeks. And many of those games were against teams projected to be in the mix for a playoff spot this year. For a team that supposedly has the worst roster in hockey that we’ve been told will be cleaning up confetti after another draft lottery party, coming out of that stretch of games with a 3-2-2 record and a plus-four goal differential is pretty impressive.

The Blackhawks got their lunches handed to them in the second period last night. High Danger Chances favored the Ducks 6-1 in the second period (according to Natural Stat Trick). Goaltending saved the Blackhawks’ collective butts in the middle frame. But the Hawks came out of the room and completely flipped the script in the third. Head coach Jeff Blashill said after the game he thought the Blackhawks were able to do to the Ducks what Anaheim did to them in the second: control the puck, keep them on their heels and force them into extended shifts with offensive zone time. That turnaround was very impressive in a game against a good opponent.

Unbelievable shot by Connor Bedard. He's been dialed in tonight. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/gImTI5iE4U

    — Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) October 20, 2025 How good was Connor Bedard last night? He was officially credited with nine shots on net (and had two more attempts). I know there are the usual suspects who will jump into the comments and point out that he only won two of seven faceoffs, but that’s really missing the point this morning. The Blackhawks were credited with 46 shot attempts as a team at 5-on-5. Bedard was on the ice for a team-high 25 of them. He was dangerous seemingly on every shift, and was looking for his shot. But it was his patience and a pass that ended the night. Bedard winning a final puck battle behind Anaheim goal and then setting up Ryan Donato on the doorstep for the game-winner was another quintessential “the New Bedard” moment to add to the early season clips.

    — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 20, 2025 With both Nick Foligno and Jason Dickinson out of the lineup last night, Alex Vlasic and Tyler Bertuzzi were wearing an A; Connor Murphy has his usual A on as well. After the win, Vlasic was on the WGN Radio postgame and talked about the significance of having an A on his chest for his hometown Blackhawks:

“It’s kind of weird, honestly. The first thing I noticed when I would come to games and you would see guys like Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, Kaner, all these guys wearing the A’s, it’s kind of crazy to think that kids are coming to games and looking at me the same way. I don’t feel like I’m that good or that much of a leader compared to those guys, but it definitely is a pinch-me moment. I’m super thankful for that. It’s a really cool opportunity.”

Without Dickinson and Foligno — of the Blackhawks’ primary penalty killers — available last night, the Hawks still killed four of five Ducks power plays. Is that still too many penalties? Absolutely. Were there a couple that came at terrible times? Yes. Did a power play goal tie the game late in the third period? Yup. But the PK has been and continued to be a strength last night, and they did it without a couple of the guys who are counted on to play a significant role. The fact that the Blackhawks coaches have enough confidence in the “next man up” mentality and the players are backing up that faith is impressive. The Athletic had their beat writers share something brief that they’re seeing from all 32 NHL teams this weekend. Here’s what Scott Powers wrote about the Blackhawks before Sunday night’s game against the Ducks:

The Blackhawks are passing the eye test right now. They look more structured. They look like they’re competing more. They’ve been in every game. Not all of the underlying numbers are as shiny right now, but first-year coach Jeff Blashill has the Blackhawks pointed in the right direction and has a young team buying into his process.

According to MoneyPuck (thru Sunday night’s games), Blackhawks goaltender Spencer Knight has the best Goals Saved Above Expected (8.7) in the entire NHL. He is the No. 1 goaltender in the league in Wins Above Replacement (1.45) as well. JFresh’s analytics also like the Blackhawks’ goaltending tandem thus far. Here’s what they shared before last night’s performance from Knight:

    — The Sheet with Jeff Marek (@thesheethockey) October 19, 2025 Once he cleared waivers on Sunday, the Blackhawks activated Joey Anderson and assigned him to Rockford. The IceHogs were in Rosemont to face the Wolves on Sunday afternoon. Chicago scored the first three goals of the game — the IceHogs answered with the next four! Nick Lardis had three assists and this goal in just the second period alone.

    — Rockford IceHogs (@goicehogs) October 19, 2025 Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham had the second assist on the overtime game-winning goal for Kitchener on Sunday. He now has 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 9 games to start the season. Sam Hallam, who will be Sweden’s head coach in the 2026 Winter Olympics, was at the United Center on Sunday. Blackhawks assistant coach Anders Sörensen will be on Hallam’s coaching staff. One would imagine Ducks center Leo Carlsson will probably be on their roster. Panthers forward Brad Marchand was fined $5,000 for ripping Rasmus Dahlin’s bucket apart on Saturday. It made for a funny video on the interwebs, but left Dahlin looking for a backup to protect his melon and that’s not ideal. The San Jose Sharks placed defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin on injured reserve and recalled Luca Cagnoni. Speaking of the Sharks, we’ve been led to believe the vibes are all exquisite in San Jose. And yet they entered Sunday as the only team in the NHL still holding a zero in the win column. Their head coach is getting frustrated. I’m sure there will be similar think pieces talking about how they need to get Macklin Celebrini help and how they’re going to crush his development and he’s going to leave as soon as his ELC is done like there with Connor Bedard when things weren’t all sunshine and rainbows his sophomore year in the NHL…
