After almost a decade together, Kate Middleton believed that perhaps, Prince William might never propose, wrote a royal author.
She reportedly assumed that William had no plans to take their relationship to the next level. But following a trip to Africa with friends, an unexpected change in plans caught Kate completely off guard.Royal author Katie Nicholl said in her book Kate, The Future Queen, that the couple's trip to Kenya left the future princess hopeful "she might return with a ring on her finger," reported The Daily Mail. As the trip continued, Kate reportedly was upset that her hopes for a proposal were dashed after William didn't pop the question.
However, she was reportedly surprised when William added some extra private time to their group trip, with a stay at the Il Ngwesi Lodge. It was there that he got down on one knee and finally proposed marriage to his longtime girlfriend, knowing "it would be the perfect place."

"Although no one - not even his father [King Charles] or brother - knew of his intention to propose to Kate while away. William had spoken with Prince Harry to make sure his younger brother was happy for him to have their mother's ring, as and when the time came," Nicholl wrote of the couple's engagement.
In November 2010, William said during the couple's first joint interview, that he had been carrying Princess Diana's iconic 12ct oval Ceylon sapphire ring, surrounded by 14 round diamonds set in white gold, in his rucksack for some time before presenting it to Kate.
"I'd been planning it for a while but as any guy out there will know it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going," William told royal reporter Tom Bradby in an interview with ITV. "I was planning it and then it just felt really right out in Africa."
He continued, "It was beautiful and I had done a little bit of planning to show my romantic side. I had been carrying [the ring] around with me in my rucksack for about three weeks before that and I literally would not let it go, everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it because I knew this thing, if it disappeared I would be in a lot of trouble and because I'd planned it, it went fine."
William concluded, "You hear a lot of horror stories about proposing and things going horribly wrong. It went really, really well and I was really pleased she said yes."
