Country Singer Shares an Update on Living With Heart Diagnosis: ‘It Just Kinda Became This Crazy Thing’

Ashley Cooke has been living with the rare disease known as Brugada syndrome for quite some time now, and she’s opening up about how life has been for her since her diagnosis.

In a new interview with E! News, the country singer/songwriter from Parkland, Florida, shared that the condition has unfortunately run through her father’s side of the family.

“I was diagnosed with Brugada syndrome, which a lot of my dad's side of the family has, and it just kinda became this crazy thing,” Cooke told the outlet. “A lot of people on my dad's side, they've unfortunately—out of nowhere, without even knowing they had it—had a cardiac episode and they were gone.”

According to Mayo Clinic, Brugada syndrome “is a rare but potentially life-threatening heart rhythm condition (arrhythmia) that is sometimes inherited. People with Brugada syndrome have an increased risk of irregular heart rhythms beginning in the lower chambers of the heart (ventricles).”

Cooke revealed her condition to fans back in July 2025 in a TikTok video, after she underwent multiple electrocardiogram (EKG) procedures and received a confirmed diagnosis from her doctors. For her, 28, not knowing much about the disease is what she considers to be “the toughest part,” but she adds, “I'm still learning about it every day. I really don't know as much as I'd like to know, because there really isn't a ton that we can know.”

“From what I’ve been told, it's the kind of syndrome that nothing really affects you until it does, and it's fatal,” the “your place” songstress explained. “That's just the way that it goes.”

Over the last two years, Cooke has experienced plenty of highs with a No. 1 hit, award nominations, and opening slots on some of the biggest tours. But during that time, she has also been met with a number of lows, especially when it comes to family health.

“I really had the craziest last two years with a lot of health stuff with my whole family and myself, which kinda just added onto it,” she acknowledged. “My dad had cancer for the fifth time....My mom had a heart attack. Both of my grandmothers passed away. My sister had stuff with her thyroid that she’s been posting about, too.”

She Remains Positive, Despite Her Diagnosis

Despite the difficult health battles surrounding her family, Cooke remains positive and hopeful about her Brugada syndrome diagnosis as she explains, “It’s just something I'm living with. It doesn’t affect my day-to-day life, the shows, or the adrenaline. It's just one of those things that I have.”

“I just know that could be something that takes me someday,” she continues. “That sounds really weird and morbid, but at the same time, I’m learning every day more about it; there’s really just not a whole lot you can do. It’s just how it is, and hopefully I can live a long, happy life.”

    Music Helps Her Cope

Music also helps the star cope as she explains, “I think the best part of country music, honestly, just music in general, is that people are collaborating so much more these days. I don’t know if it’s just the nature of we’re putting more music out, at a more rapid pace, or what, but it just feels like everybody wants to collaborate. All the headliners want to bring their openers out.”

“My music and Jelly Roll’s music are very different, but getting to come up on stage and sing with him and his whole crew was a blast,” she adds, likely referring to a duet performance of Garth Brooks' “Friends in Low Places” that she and Jelly Roll knocked out at Country Thunder in Wisconsin earlier this year. “We’re great friends. He’s the sweetest in the whole world.”
