For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Griffin Oehler from Rockville, Maryland, has announced his intention to swim and study at the University of Florida, beginning in the 2027-28 school year. He wrote on social media:
“I am blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Florida! All glory to God! I’d like to thank my family, friends, coaches, and everyone that has helped me reach this point. A special thank you to Coach Jack, Coach Whitney, Coach Nesty, and the rest of the Florida staff for giving me this opportunity. I am incredibly grateful and honored to be part of the Gator family. GO GATORS! ”
Oehler, whom we ranked #13 on our Way Too Early list of top boys’ swimming recruits from the high school class of 2027, is the third pickup for the Gators; they have also received verbal pledges from #12 Luke Zardavets and “Honorable Mention” Trent Allen.
Trent Allen.
As a sophomore at Georgetown Prep last season, he won the 200 IM (1:47.32) and 100 back (PB of 48.49) at the Washington Metro Interscholastic Championships before going on to Eastern Interscholastics, where he again won the 200 IM (1:47.45) and placed 4th in the 100 back (lowering his PB to 48.41).
Swimming at NCSA Spring Championships with his club team, Rockville Montgomery Swim Club, Oehler clocked PBs in the 200 free (1:36.93) and 200 back (1:43.03) and came in 3rd in the 200 back and 200 IM and 9th in the 200 free and 100 back. He finished short-course season with drops of .4 in the 100 back, 3.6 in the 200 back, .6 in the 50 free, 1.1 in the 100 free, 3.1 in the 200 free, 2.1 in the 100 breast, .7 in the 100 fly, and 2.2 in the 200 IM.
Similarly, this summer, he improved his LCM times by .7 in the 100 back, 1.1 in the 200 back, 2.2 in the 50 free, 1.8 in the 100 free, 2 in the 200 free, 2.4 in the 200 IM, and 13.2 in the 400 IM. He closed out the season at Summer Juniors in Irvine, where he placed 17th in the 50 back, 8th in the 100 back, 14th in the 200 back, 10th in the 200 IM, and 26th in the 400 IM, earning PBs of 24.16 in the 50 free, 26.27 in the 50 back, 56.69 in the 100 back, 2:04.31 in the 200 back, 2:03.83 in the 200 IM, and 4:28.27 in the 400 IM.
With a 48.4/1:43.0 backstroke portfolio as a sophomore in high school, Oehler could be in a position to take over from Gators Jonny Marshall (43.22/1:35.85 last season), Scotty Buff (45.23), and Caleb Maldari (45.96/1:40.05) when they graduate in 2027. He’ll overlap a year with Aiden Norman (45.96/1:39.69) and Matt Cairns (47.02/1:43.40).
